Adeline Swan was completely, absolutely, astonishingly sick of her boarding school. If there was any word she would pick to describe her life there, it would be brown. Her dorm was brown, her campus was brown, and everybody's personalities were as bland as the color brown (though she believed that even with all of this it was still better than Arizona). She had decided to go away for school because she wasn't a huge fan of Phoenix, whether that be the climate, the quality of education, or the people. Even though she missed her twin sister dearly, she could only stand to be in Phoenix for a few months out of the year. Once she heard that her sister was moving to Forks, Washington to live with their father, however, she jumped at the opportunity to move and attend public school with her sister. Bella was the only person that truly understood Adeline, and their father, Charlie, was a very close second. Adeline had loved visiting her father in Forks. She loved the green forest, she loved the way the rain smelled, and she loved how cozy the atmosphere was.

As Adeline stepped off the plane with her sister, she saw Charlie waiting for them. Hopping into his police chief cruiser, Adeline could see that her sister was embarrassed to ride in the vehicle. She, on the other hand, couldn't be happier. Riding in the cruiser made her feel invincible. Even though she was nervous to start school, she felt like she already had something over everybody else. They couldn't bully her here. Her dad was a cop. The cop to be exact.

"Your hair's longer." Adeline jumped as she
heard her father trying to make small talk with
Bella.

"I cut it since the last time I saw you." Way to
make it awkward, Bells.

"Guess it grew out again." Good try, Dad.

Sometimes Adeline thought her father and her
sister were too similar. They were both shy and
awkward, and when they got together it was always like she was stuck boiling in some sort of weird, awkward soup.

"I put Grandpa's old desk in your room, Bella," Charlie said as he parked and began unloading the car. "Your's looked like it was holding up well, Addie, so I didn't think to replace it, but if you hate it we can find you something else. And I cleared off two shelves in the bathroom for you both."

"That's right. One bathroom." Bella grimaces.

"Yeah, Bells, so no more hogging the shower for
an hour while I'm trying to get ready. And my
desk is great, thanks dad."

"Great," Charlie says, "I'll just put these up in your room."

"I can do it."

Adeline watches as Bella and Charlie both reach for the bags and bump into each other. Bella backs off, letting Charlie carry the bags upstairs. She trails behind him, heading upstairs to adjust to her room. Adeline follows behind her, seeing as her room was right across the hall. She walks into her bedroom and looks around. Her walls are the same charcoal grey that she remembers. Her floor is still covered in a white carpet, with art she created when she was a kid decorating the walls. Some people might see it as a child's room, but to her it was just looking back at her memories in Forks. She looks over to see her cork bulletin board almost empty, except for a few pictures of her and Bella, and a single picture of her and Charlie. In the middle of reminiscing, Adeline hears a loud HONK. She runs downstairs to see a very old, red truck outside. Adeline smiles at the pair exiting the vehicle as Charlie greets them.

"Bella, Addie, you both remember Billy Black."

"Glad you're finally here. Charlie hasn't shut up
about it since you told him you were coming."

"Keep exaggerating, I'll wheel you down the hill,"
Charlie jokes.

"Right after I ram you in the ankles," Billy replies
while taking several shots at Charlie, who laughs
and dodges them. That's when Adeline sees
Jacob approach, albeit quite timidly.

"I'm Jacob, We made mud pies together when we were little."

Adeline lets out a small laugh as Bella responds,
"Yeah, I remember. Are they always like this?"

The three teenagers look over at the two men,
who are still laughing and chasing each other.

"Yeah," Jacob smiles, "It's getting worse with old
age."

"So," Charlie says as he tries to catch his breath,
"how do you two like your homecoming present?"

"No way, the truck is for us?" Bella asks Charlie
as the two girls made their way over the check it out.

"Just bought it off Billy here," Charlie responds.

"I rebuilt the engine and -"

"It's perfect," Adeline interrupts Jacob excitedly.
Thank you so much, dad."

Adeline watches as Bella goes to open up the
door to the truck and accidentally hits Jacob with
it. Poor kid, Addie thinks, he already looks so
smitten.

"Maybe we can give you a ride to school," Bella
offers to the boy.

"I go to school on the reservation," Jacob responds, seeming a little disappointed at the
prospect that he would miss out on spending
time with Bella.

"Too bad," Bella says, not noticing the
disappointment Adeline had picked up on. "It
would've been nice to know at least one person."

"What the hell am I then Bells, chopped liver?
Give your sister some love. Aren't you excited to
finally go to school together?"

"Yeah, yeah, whatever you say Addie," Bella
responds with a sarcastic smile, starting up the truck.
