The boys and I are enjoying an afternoon by Nathan's pool. Everyone is splashing around and horsing around. The grill is going. Music is playing. The boys are laughing and happy. For just this moment in time it's like we are any other group of ordinary teens. No Volto, Hendricks or Mccoy. No Academy. No runnning arouond like crazy people. It's nice. I sigh heavily, knowing it won't last.
As if on cue, Kota's phone goes off. He swims to the side of the pool and North hands him his phone. I cringe. If I had tried that I would be dropping the phone in he pool right now. We can only hear his side of the conversation but it's obvious that something is happening.
" Yeah. Everyone's here. Are you sure? All of them? Yeah, okay . We'll be right there." He hands his phone back to North and grimaces at the others. "Sorry guys, we have to go. North you stay with Sang and don't burn dinner. " He levers himself up and out of the pool with his arms, water streaming down his bare, muscled chest. My breath catches and my mouth goes dry.
"What's going on, Kota?" Nathan asks him. Everyone is moving to get out of the pool.
" Hendricks, Mccoy and that guy from the district are at the school with some other guy. We think something big is happening. We need to get in there and find out what." Everyoe nodded and the boys all started moving around, drying off and putting on shirts and shoes. My eyes darted around, unsure where to look first . So many naked , muscled, glistening chests. My brain short circuited.
" Sang! Sang! " I started out of my dripping chest induced stupor when Luke hollered my name. " Are you going to answer your phone? I thought i was supposed to be the daydreamer." He grinned at me and I snatched up my phone, answering it without looking since it could only be Owen or Sean. A shiver ran through me at the voice on the other end of the phone.
"Sang, " I recognized the mechanically altered voice immediately and switched on the speaker phone. The boys all froze as they heard it. "don't go to the school. Don't let the boys go to the school. " I was confused.
" What? You hate the boys ." Why was he giving them a warning? What the hell was going on?
" Don't go to the school. Don't let them go to the school. " He repeated then hung up. I looked arouond at the boys confused. Kota was on his phone, presumably talking to Mr. Blackbourne about my phone call. Hanging up he shook his head.
" We can't let this oppurtunity pass up. We have to go." I bit my lip to avoid saying anything. I didn't want them to go, especially after Volto's call. But they had to. I knew that . Everyone but North left, waving and giving me reassurances of beng back before I knew they were gone. I couldn't help the feeling that something terrible was about to happen.
~Kota~
We piled into North's jeep, crowding in since it wasn't far to the school. I didn't like any of this. I had a bad feeling in my gut. What where Hendricks and Mccoy doing at the school on a sunday anyway. No one was there. Not even the janitor, since he worked nights. We had gotten just barely within sight of Ashley Waters when Luke slammed on the brakes. I sent him a questioning look.
"Something doesn't feel right, Kota. I don't like this." It was almost a mumble. The others were shifting uncomfortably and nodding their agreement. I felt it too but this was our assignment. I didn't know what to do. The others waited for me to make a descision. What the hell should we do? My question became moot as the school suddenly blew up, right before our eyes. The explosion rattled everything around us and sent pieces of the school flying. Luke hastily moved the Jeep out of the danger zone. No one said a word.
Hours later we were watching the emergency crews pick through the wreckage of Ashley Waters. We had called Sang and assured we were fine. A shout came up from an emergency worker and others ran over but the air around them quickly turned sad. From a safe, discreet distance we watched as one by one they pulled the mangled bodies out of the wreckage. Luke snuck closer to confirm what we thought. Several minutes later he was back by our side.
" It's them" He said quietly. I nodded. That was it then. Mccoy, Hendricks and his accomplices were dead and Ashley Waters was rubble. What Now?
