Lawrence Alloway was an English critic who was a leading member of the Independent Group in the 1950s. The Independent Group was a group of young, writers, and critics who met at the Institute Contemporary Arts. The group first started in the winter of 1952 and then again in 1953. Some people who were a part of the Independent Group are artists Richard Hamilton and William Turnbull, architects Alison and Peter Smithson, James Stirling and Colin St John Wilson, and critics Lawrence Alloway and Reyner Banham. The Independent Group looked at, discussed, analysed, wrote about, designed, built, and assembled a world of highly significant work exploring contemporary culture. Using a variety of sources, they created a unique approach to looking and working with visual culture.
