A blue and gray she-cat lay in the MistClan nursery with her three kits who'd just been born a little bit ago. Her mate stood beside her, looking down at his kits. Two of them were struggling to get air, a pale tabby she-kit and a dark blue tom kit. The queen had named the she-kit Dawnkit, and the tom Trenchkit. Her second tom kit, Reedkit, was smaller than his siblings, and was barely breathing.

The queen looked up at her mate, her eyes watery. Her mate gently licked her ears before turning to look at the cat that stood beside them.

The cat shook his head slowly and sorrowfully. "I'm sorry, but they just won't make it. They're too small and weak. There is nothing I can do."

The first tom looked at his mate who was trying to hold back her tears. He noticed that Reedkit had stopped breathing. His mate let out a wail of grief and sadness. The tom tried to comfort her by stroking her back. Trenchkit was trying to take gulps of air with his little pink mouth until his chest stopped the pattern of rising and falling.

The she-cat let out another wail and Dawnkit did the same as her brother. The tom laid down besides his mate, who kept wailing. Her wails were filled with grief and sadness.

"Our kits are in the paws of StarClan, Rainspeck." The tom mewed gently, stroking her back with his tail. "They'll be in good paws. They'll grow up to be strong cats."

The queen, Rainspeck, looked at her mate, her eyes wet. "Are you sure?"

Rainspeck's mate nodded. "I'm sure."

Rainspeck whimpered before picking up Dawnkit, her only she-kit. Her mate picked up Trenchkit, and the second tom picked up Reedkit. The three cats padded out of the nursery and into the camp clearing where cats whispered and murmured things to each other. Rainspeck laid Dawnkit down in the middle of the camp, her mate laying Trenchkit down beside her, and the second tom gently setting Reedkit next to them.

Cats gathered and hung their heads. Rainspeck laid her head on her mates' shoulder while the second tom spoke the words a medicine cat would say when a Clanmate died.

Rainspeck looked at the tom when he'd finished speaking. "Silverleaf, are you sure they'll be safe in StarClan like Aloeheart said?" She whimpered.

The tom named Silverleaf nodded. "I'm sure."

Rainspeck's mate, Aloeheart, laid down beside his kits and laid his tail over them. Rainspeck did the same as other cats began to sit beside them in silence. The air was filled with grief and sadness. Every cat could feel it as the sun started to set and snow started to fall.
