mike had stuffed his pockets with as much candy as he could, swiftly walking upstairs and ignoring his 15 year old sister who bumped him as she walked by.
"mike's hoarding candy again." her voice had only caused him to walk faster and he had ignored his moms yells for him, shrugging continuously and finally he made it to his room, letting go of all of the candy causing it to hit the ground all at once.
"woah!" river had leaned forward, slipping her jacket off and meeting mike down on the floor. she crossed her legs as she sat next to him, studying all of the candy he was clearly proud of in a way.
"yeah! had some extra money so.." his little lie wouldn't matter later, but to be exact this was just nancy's halloween candy she didn't bother to touch.
when mike looked up to river, he took notice to the tear streaks that ran down her face, and her red eyes. it was odd to see that those were paired with her pretty smile.
"you were crying?" mike's voice softened from the boastful tone to a careful one, and river glanced over before awkwardly denying.
"no, no. it's just raining out, so you know." she muttered the lie, only because it was embarrassing when she cried in front of the boys, she figured this wasn't any different.
"the rain st-" mike would've went on to catch her in her lie, and make her tell him the truth but what was the point? to make her feel even worse, and cry more? no, he would never do that to river.

jk ok sorry back to story"i mean yeah that's true." he gave a small smile, and river's face had become full of relief as she looked back to the candy, picking out one.
"this is a shit ton of candy should we invite the rest?" she asked, stuffing her face and wiping her eyes discreetly.
"uhm.." mike took a minute to look back at the phone, and he stared. he knew river was crying because of home, and she came to his house. while he hated that she had to go through what she did he took pride in the fact that she went to him to make her feel better. she could've gone to anybody else's, and as of now he just wanted it to be them.
besides they would definitely have noticed she'd been crying and he knows she wouldn't want that.
"no, they told me they were busy today. also that means more candy, no lucas and dustin fighting over it with you."
river had only nodded in response as she picked out her favorite candy's that had been mike's too but he kept quiet about it.
"alright." she giggled in response, and mike smiled at that. he smiled at the slight bit her cheeks rose up with a grin, and the way her eyes weren't the same sad ones they were a second ago.
river's definition of safe space was mike. as she looked up to find him he was only getting his blanket from his bed, handing it to her, because she was clearly still cold from biking over to his house in november.
"want to see who eats the most candy without throwing up?" he had taken his seat next to her again, watching her throw the blanket over herself and shake her head.
"gross, mike. no." with a small smile she of course denied, being the same girl who was disgusted by the gore in the movies the boys watched.
"yeah, me neither."
