Radio Silent

I lay alone in my bed, staring at the ceiling.

It had been so different this time.
She hadn't rushed me to get away from her when we finished, in fact, she held me close.

I grab my phone and check for a message from her for the hundredth time in the last hour; still nothing. Not a call, text, snap. Nothing. She hasn't said a thing to me and I didn't even see her for the rest of work. It was like she had disappeared. She hasn't texted me, or anything in a few days.

I think I would have felt better had she pushed me away and said that we were never going to talk about what had happened, or sent me a text demanding that I go over to her place, but the complete silence is killing me.

I decide to text her first, tired of waiting on her.

Me:
Hey, you up?
sent 2:04am

I set my phone back down after making sure my ringer is on and open up my laptop. Might as well do some job hunting while I wait. I've been wanting to get a new job for a while, but everything has been so hectic and with her always calling me over, I haven't really had the time.

Maybe the radio silence is a bit of a good thing; gives me some time to focus.

After a while of scrolling on indeed, going from option to option, I notice that my phone still hasn't gone off.

Maybe she fell asleep.

I grab my phone off the charger and go to my messages.

Me:
Hey, you up?
read 3:36am

I check the current time.
3:42am.

She pretty much just saw it, and just left me on read.

"Are you kidding me?" I mutter, getting out of bed and going to the window.

I'm prepared to climb over as always and ask her what the fuck is going on but I stop when I see her light on and the shadow of her body pacing back and forth.

She walks in front of the window and I can see her worried expression as she goes past, frantically talking to someone on the phone.

What the hell is going on?

I slowly climb over as she goes out of view again, careful to be quiet so she doesn't hear me.

"Lacey! I've already told you! I've told you a hundred times! There is a huge possibility!" I can hear her nearly shout before, pausing and lowering her voice, "I'm sorry, I'm just super stressed out."

Again, there's a pause as she paces again. I press myself to the wall as much as possible, hoping that she doesn't see me.

"I can't, you know I can't," she seems to chock on her words as she listens to what the other person has to say, "I cant do that either, he'd leave and you know it."

Who would leave?
Me?

"Why would he have any reason to stick around?" she walks away again, "Exactly, no reason whatsoever."

There's another silence before she speaks again.

"Look," she sighs, "I'll go get one in the morning, I'll talk to you then. Bye, love you."

I can hear her toss her phone on her bed, letting out another sigh as she does, then i can hear the creaking of her box spring as she sits down.

"Shit! Danny!"

I panic at first, thinking she's seen me, before realizing she meant the text.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck, what do I do?"

My phone lights up with a text from her.

Y/n:
"Sorry, was in the shower."
Now

"For three hours?" I hear her mutter to herself, "yeah, really believable."

I slowly move back to the tree and make sure to make noise this time, as I make it seem like I'm just now headed over.

She rushes to the window, and I can clearly see her mascara has run down her cheeks.
She's been crying.

"You okay?" I ask, climbing into her room.

"Uh, yeah," she sits in her bed, refusing to look at me.

"Your hair's not wet," I remark, hoping to get her to tell me the truth.

"I blowdried it," she still doesn't look up at me.

"And you still have makeup on," I press.

"I forgot to wipe it off before the shower."

God damn it.

I kneel down in front of her, trying to get her to look at me, but she continues to avoid my eyes.

"Is this about the other day?" I ask, "cuz I can pretend that it never happened if you want me to."

"It's not about that," she shakes her head dismissively, "I mean it kind of is, but it's not important right now."

"Is something up?" I'm getting more and more worried by the second.

"It's nothing," she snaps a bit, then takes a deep breath, "look, can you just.... stay here with me tonight?"

"Uh, yeah, of course."

What's going on?

She scoots back and lays down, and I follow suit, wrapping my arms around her and giving her a small squeeze.

"Not too tight," she whispers, "I haven't been feeling the best?"

"Are you sick?" I loosen my grip.

"I hope so," she mutters.

"You hope so?" I sit up a bit to look at her with a brow raised.

"Yeah," she finally looks at me, a weak smile playing on her lips, "so that I can get you sick."

"The fuck?" I chuckle.

"Then you can just call if sick from work and we can hang out."

Hang out?
We never hang out.

"What's going on, y/n?" I ask, serious again.

"We'll talk about it in the morning," she rolls back onto her side, pulling me to lay down with her, "right now I just want to sleep."

"Okay," I kiss her shoulder softly before getting comfortable.

In a matter of minutes, I can tell she's fallen asleep as her breathing has evened out and her body is no longer tense at all.

I can feel the pins and needle start to prick my arm that's laying under her head and consider moving it. One look at her peaceful, sleeping self, and I think better of it.

It's worth it.
