Bryce's POV

I lay on Jacob's bed with my laptop looking through pictures I have saved. I came across a picture of me and my ex, Buck, at a Kidd G concert, me kissing Buck's cheek. I remember that night but I really wish I didn't.

Flashback

It was 7:24. My dad's passed out in his chair. I text Buck and tell him to come pick me up. I was nervously pacing around my room because I've never snuck out before. Buck pulls into the driveway and I run out the backdoor and hop in his truck. He leans over the console and kisses my cheek.

"Do you wanna get something to eat before the concert?"

I nod. He puts his right hand on the console. I intertwine my hand with his and look out the window. We are in the middle of nowhere and it seems there's no houses for miles.

By the time we get to the restaurant I've seem probably 20 deer. Couple of bucks.

Buck gets out and opens the door for me. He grabs my hand as we walk in the door. He orders a burger with a sweet tea. I eat some of his fries and drink my Coke.

End of Flashback

Jacob sits beside me and looks at the screen.

"Who's he?"

I look down and quickly go to the next picture.

"Buck, an old friend."

He hums. I open the assignment. A 5 page essay over any European country.

"I say we do France or Italy," I say looking over to Jacob, waiting for him to agree, but he never did.

"Why don't we do Russia?"

"Why would we do Russia?"

"Why would we do Italy or France?"

"Because they're way more interesting that Russia, and Italians are hot."

"Touché, we're doing Italy."

I nod. There's a knock on his door and then a dark haired girl, probably 23 or so, pokes her head in.

"J, supper's done, your friend can join if he wants, momma made plenty." She walks out and closes the door.

Jacob looks over to me, "You hungry?"

In all honesty, yes, I'm starving, I haven't eaten a real meal in years.

"I could eat."

We walk downstairs and sit at the table. I don't actually know what this is on the table.

"It's fried deer meat and fried green tomatoes. They're really good, trust me."

I take a bite of the tomatoes. Jacob was not lying. They are amazing.

The rest of dinner didn't go so smooth though. Jacob's mom started asking questions.

"So Bryce, who's your folks?"

"Uh, my mom was Carla Dean, she passed a few years back, and my dad is Bryan Parker."

"I know him, he comes down to the restaurant a lot to see one of our waitresses."

"Yea, that's him, always out and not at home watching his kids."

"You have siblings?"

"A few actually but they live with foster parents because of my dad's drinking problem."

"What do you mean by drinking problem?"

"He's an alcoholic and sometimes he drinks too much and gets violent."

"Oh, I'm so sorry dear."

"It's fine, Mrs. Day, It's stopped now, he's meeting with AA and he's doing so much better."

"Well, he has definitely taught you some manners."

"I suppose he did."

"What about your mom, what happened?"

"MOM, you can't just asked someone how their mom died!!"

"No, Jacob, it's fine, I don't mind, she was really sick and had an accident at home and no one was close enough to help her." I tear up.

"Let's  change the subject," Jacob said, noticing my glossy eyes.

He gave me a concerned look. I just nod and give a soft smile.

Working with Jacob is definitely gonna change my life.
