Chapter Five: A Unintended Friendship?

James wakes up to see Katie still sleeping on the other side of the bed. He gets up and looks at his phone to see 5 calls from his mom and a few text from Maddie.

Calling his mother, he reassures her that he was no where near Seaside yesterday and will be in time for the Family dinner tomorrow before looking at the text from Maddie.

"Hey James. I see what's happening on the news. Are you ok and if you are please come to my place on 21st street. It's on the last street from the Harbor if that helps. Text me first so I'll be waiting outside for you when you get here. I want to make sure you're ok."

James thinks before responding

"Hey Maddie. Don't worry about me, I'm ok. I can't say much right now, but I can come over right now if you want me to. I just need to get a shower and get ready."

Maddie responds almost immediately

"That's perfect. I'm just working on somethings for my boss then I'll head outside and wait for you. See you soon!"

James sits up and goes to head to the motel rooms bathroom, checking for any hidden cameras just to make sure from all the horror stories he has heard.

After a quick hot shower he exits the bathroom in a hoodie and jeans to see Katie awake and sitting on the bed.

Katie: You didn't want me to join you?

James: What?

Katie: You know what I mean?

James: What the hell Katie we just met yesterday on a battlefield and now you're talking about sleeping together.

Katie: I wanted to thank you for saving me and letting me stay here with you.

James: Well it's for both of our safety, we need to lie low for a few days before the next move.

Katie: Which is?

James: Publishing all of the information we have to the wider public and getting these fucks investigated.

Katie: Well that should at least get whatever you have out there, but is it full proof?

James: No, but it's the best way to garner support for Seaside and our cause.

Katie: Yeah. Anyway the offer still stands if you want to crawl back in this bed.

James: Jesus Katie, you need to control yourself. I have a eye for someone else anyway.

Katie: Oh? Who is she?

James: None of your damn business. Now try to not get recognized by anyone you can't trust. Ok?

Katie: Of course. You have fun with your other girl.

James: Other girl? You were all quiet and shy yesterday, what happened?

Katie: Well I was scared, but now I'm more comfortable especially with a guy who slept in the same bed with me.

James: Yeah. Well now it will be a one time thing.

Katie: We'll see.

James: Keep yourself safe Katie.

Katie: You too James.

James leaves the motel and pulls his hood over his head before beginning the walk across town. He makes sure to stay away from any highly populated areas like the towns market and eventually makes it to 21st street, seeing Maddie sitting on a bench.

"James!"

Maddie runs up and hugs him before he calms her down.

James: Can we get inside? We can talk after."
