Robin's POV -
It was a Monday. The slowest day of the week. The worst part was that I had to work alone. Having all that time to myself in the video store made me consider quitting, but I knew better than that. If I quit, I wouldn't have any money to spend on random useless crap, and that's what I lived for.
I wasn't expecting anyone. Maybe one or two customers maximum, but that's it.
I was shocked when I looked through the window and saw Nancy Wheeler park her car outside and walk towards the door. I wasn't sure why but I started internally panicking.
What is she here for? Does she know Steve doesn't work on Mondays? She looks really nice today. Oh no she opened the door. Sit up straight! Fix your hair! Do I look stupid? Oh my god she's looking at me. Her smile is so nice-
"Hey Robin!" She grinned as she walked up to the front desk.
"Hi Nancy, you know Steve's not here right?" I questioned her.
"Oh yeah, I know. I was driving by and thought I'd just pop in and say hey." She explained, sort of nervous. I noticed she was playing with her fingers. She seemed extra fidgety, and I couldn't tell why.
"Nancy Wheeler came to family video just to talk to Robin Buckley? I never saw that coming." I joked.
"And I also wanted to ask if you'd like to hang out sometime.. Like, at my house. Maybe tonight if you're available. I wanna get to know you better since you're Steve's best friend, and I have nothing do to most of the time." She suggested, now leaning on the counter. "I'm sorry if it seems weird, there's just something about you that I'm curious about. I've never met someone like you in Hawkins before. You have a good sense of humor, a unique style, and effortless beauty." She rambled on.
"Effortless beauty huh?" I teased her jokingly as I reached a hand out to poke her arm. She blushed slightly and looked away to collect herself. I couldn't be more confused. "I find it hard to believe that the Nancy Wheeler wants to have a conversation with me let alone hang out. It's just so trippy."
"Of course I want to talk to you! Last Friday when we had our little interaction I realized how cool you were." She explained, now resting her chin on her fist.
"There really isn't much to me. I'm mentally ill, I'm neurodivergent, I hate men, I'm a nerd, and I'm a loner." I named off my main qualities, holding up a finger for each one. I really didn't understand why she wanted to get to know me.
Nancy rolled her eyes, "You're way more than just mentally ill and lonely. Plus, you don't have to be lonely if you befriend me."
"Hmm.. I'll think about it." I joked, resulting in her huffing at me playfully.
"Robinnnn." She groaned, looking at me with the saddest eyes she could manage in attempt to guilt trip me.
"Why on earth do you, Nancy Wheeler, Steve the hair Harrington's girlfriend, want to desperately be friends with the biggest loser in Hawkins?" I asked, not comprehending why someone so pretty and smart would want anything to do with me.
"Because you're cool and I want to make more friends!" She replied quickly, almost impatiently.
"Are you getting feisty now? Okay hold on, there is no way I'm making Nancy Wheeler angry right now. Pinch me, there's no way this is actually happening."
"Stop calling me by my full name like I'm a celebrity, it's weird."
"And you coming into this crappy video store on a Monday morning just to talk to me isn't weird??"
"It's not weird! It's a little random, but there's nothing weird about me talking to you."
"You came in here to ask me to hang out at your house tonight."
"Because I thought you'd want to."
"I do."
"Then why are you acting weird about it?"
"Because for years we've been going to school together and you haven't said a single thing to me, and then after talking once years after high school you want to hang out. How do you know I'm not a murderer?"
"Well I guess I'll find out."
"Am I really that interesting? You really don't wanna give up."
"I don't want to give up until you agree to hang out with me either tonight or some time soon."
"We can hang out tonight."
"At my house?" Her face lit up.
I snickered under my breath and rolled my eyes playfully, "No, in a dumpster. Yes your house!"
"I'm gonna clean it so good, and I'll make whatever you want and I'll set up some movies if you want- Oh wait! I'm in a video store! Robin, give me some suggestions. What are the best movies? I'm gonna find some movies hold on. Wait- Come here, help me pick some movies. Unless you don't want to watch movies tonight- if not that's totally fine. What do you wanna do?" She rambled excitedly.
After she had just basically exploded from excitement I couldn't help but stand there with my jaw dropped. She was so damn cute.
"Robin?" She waved a hand in front of my face.
"Oh. Yeah. I will literally watch any movie you choose as long as it's not a predictable romantic movie about a straight couple."
"Thanks! Cool!" She grinned.
