Kung Fu Is Dead (K.I.D.) follows the story of a teenager, Yushawn Williams, who, after witnessing the murder of his father, embarks on different paths in his search for self-discovery and justice. Tired of being picked on, Yushawn decides to fight back, asking his grandfather, Wu, to teach him the art of kung-fu. He discovers it is second nature to him. Yushawn enters the newly opened Martial Arts Dojo, Shanghai Dojo, and must face the six kung-fu senseis, all being taught one of the Six Secret Teachings by his grandfather Wu, each possessing unique and deadly styles: Judo, Krav Maga, Jeet Kune Do, Kung-Fu, Escrima/Kali, and Tai Chi, and become a member of Shanghai. However, secrets lie within the dojo grounds revolving around the death of his father, Riley Williams, and the disappearance of the legendary scroll of Augmented Qi. He quickly rises to the top of the food chain, relishing his new status as one of Shanghai's strongest men. Yushawn gets "cocky" and challenges Eli Santos, the Junior Champion of the World Martial Arts Championships, to fight. He single-handedly defeated Yushawn and his friends. To earn back his honor, Yushawn decides to enter the World Mixed Martial Arts Championships, but Yushawn is just a martial artist. If he wants a chance to win the WMMAC, he needs to develop his own sacred martial art technique. On Yushawn's birthday, he visits his grandfather to see if he can teach him a sacred art as a gift. Wu hands him a plane ticket and tells him to seek the monks of Kurama Temple,   nestled in the Hiei Mountains near the capital of Kyoto. A week later, Yushawn meets a stranger who reveals himself in turn as Junbao Li, a master of the Six Secret Teachings, and he proceeds to instruct the young hero in the martial arts, with a view to him avenging his father's death. He is determined to become the greatest fighter alive. There he was taught martial arts to strengthen the mind and body, taught from the book, Six Secret Teachings. After finishing his training, Yushawn, now going by Yu, eventually left Japan for good. When he returns, he is informed of the murder of his sensei by the same killer as his father. Yu seeks revenge for his loved ones, one day to unmask the killer. But soon, Yu learns the identity of the man who killed his sensei and father and heads to Ngannou gym, where he meets Renzo Gracie, who admits to killing his sensei and his father in search of the scroll of Augmented Qi. Yu, enraged, fights him and beats him badly. Soon he realizes that the world of martial artists is much larger than he ever imagined and that he might not be strong enough. Unable to unlock Qi, Renzo finds Yu in the finals at the WMAC with his gym members and refers to him as the "Key" while defeating him before the eyes of everyone. Yu unlocks his final chakra, recognizing that finding one's true self is the key to unlocking Qi. Yu, now fully enlightened, embraces who he is and uses his now-augmented Qi to defeat Renzo and his gym members. Now that Yu has unlocked the Secret of Qi, an overwhelmed Renzo decides to set up Yu, getting them sent to Juvie so he has time to learn the sacred augmented Qi. Yu gets arrested under the charges of breaking and entering and assault and battery. He gets sent to the Juvenile Detention Technical Center, a prison where it's every man for himself unless you're a part of a unified gang. He is rejected by juvenile gangs before he decides to form his own.
