On the first day on the job, they told her not to go into Ward Six. She didn't listen.
The New Orleans East Hospital has a reputation for being a quiet but lively place. The nurses there treat the patients like they were their own family, making sure they get the best care possible and be as comfortable as they can when they are there, and the nurses have fun with the patients to make them feel happy to the extent of giving them gifts at the gift shop downstairs such as balloons, plush toys, and flowers, and sing songs to them to lift their spirits when they have a bad day. However, this will not be the case for Kate Campbell.
Kate's first day as a nurse at the New Orleans East Hospital was not pleasant at all. Throughout the corridors of the hospital, Kate heard whispers about something bad in Ward Six from the nurses. She was warned not to be anywhere near Ward Six. The nurses were scared to enter Ward Six. But not Kate. Kate was curious and wanted to know what happened there. When Kate was in the hallways of the ward, she ducked down and tiptoed her way into Ward Six, making sure no one could hear her or know she was anywhere near Ward Six.
When Kate saw the sign to Ward Six, she stopped immediately underneath the glass window and paid attention to the conversation in Ward Six. Judging from the conversation, Kate can deduce that the doctor and the patient's spouse were inside the ward.
"So, Mrs. Wilson, what can you tell me about your husband?", the doctor asked. Mrs. Wilson sobbed and said "Luke has been sober for over 20 years straight. He wakes up early in the morning and goes for a jog every day now, and drinks 2 glasses of water after his jog. But today, he screamed in pain after drinking the water." The doctor pulled down the cloth and exposed his arm. Kate took a peek through the window and noticed something shocking. The skin of Luke's shoulder was missing. His flesh and bone were exposed. "What the hell happened to my husband's arm?", Mrs. Wilson screamed. Kate heard and saw enough. She snuck out of the wards, trying her best not to get freaked out about the things she saw in Ward Six.
When she was out of the wards, Kate's first instinct was to call her husband, Wesley, and warn him about the water. She took out her phone from her right pocket in her scrubs and called her husband. Thankfully, he was quick to answer the phone.
Wesley was a successful 38-year-old corporate lawyer. He was a natural at his job, and he won a lot of cases and recently got promoted to a partner. That may be the recent thing that made him happy, but the happiest thing that ever happened to him was when he married his high school sweetheart. They met each other in Kate's final year in high school. Wesley was a nerd, and he felt lucky to have met her when he bumped into her in the hallway. That small bump led to them being best friends cosplaying at several gaming conventions and a few years later, they were happily married. But not everything was perfect in the relationship. Wesley didn't want a child, and it took Kate a long time to convince him to have one. When Kate was pregnant, Wesley was scared. Kate was the only person that calmed him down and convince him everything was going to be fine. She gave birth to a boy.
After she got pregnant, Wesley saved up some money and bought a two-story house in the suburbs. It is a house that most couples would dream of. Together, they painted the baby room. They chose green paint because it signifies growth and peace. After 5 years of taking care of their son Josh, she went to work for the first time, finally ready to help people. Wesley, however, wasn't ready to work. He enjoyed being a parent and wanted to take his son on the first day of school. As he was making breakfast, he received a call from Kate.
Wesley answered the phone as he was at the stove making pancakes for him and Josh. "Hey, Kate. Just woke up, and I'm making breakfast for Josh and me.", Wesley said. In a panic, Kate replied, "Wes, I want you to listen to me." Wesley was worried about Kate and asked "Everything okay, Kate? What's going on?". Kate said "There's something in the water. Whatever you do, don't drink it. Boil everything." Wesley said "Alright, I'll do that. Anything else?" Kate replied "Pack up our things. Bad things are going to happen soon. I can feel it." Wesley said "I'll pack everything after our breakfast. And Kate?" "Yeah?" Kate asked. Wesley said "Stay safe. I love you." Kate replied with "I love you too." and hung up the phone.
