It's a dry greenleaf and the clans don't have enough water. Two clans, that don't like each other, send one of their apprentices with the other clan's apprentice to go search for a new source of water (as a sign of their alliance). The apprentices hate each other, but slowly grow fond of each other and don't like being separated again when their journey ends.
They continue to meet even after that, and then it depends on you. They can become mates, good friends or find out that they are siblings.
