"The world was teeming with life, but asteroids hit the planet and the dinosaurs went extinct. That was sixty-five million years ago." The tourists listened intently to me, their tour guide, as I explained this.
My name tag read 'Eliott' under a black silhouette of a dilophosaurus.
I had moved to America less than a month ago, and would be staying a year with my uncle Nathan in Amber Beach away from my parents. I had applied for a job at the Amber Beach dinosaur museum and was invited for an interview with the manager, Kendall Morgan, or Ms Morgan as she was known by the staff.
Ms Morgan was very impressed with my resume an my extensive knowledge of dinosaurs, I was practically handed the job on the spot, not that there were many people to compete with.
I was soon introduced to some of my new coworkers. Shelby was clumsy and naïve but very intelligent. Koda was strong and kind but slow in the brain department.
Then... there was Chase. He was the definition of a "ladies' man", always flirting with customers and tourists.
Truthfully, I have had a huge crush on Chase ever since I started working here, but would never dare tell him how I felt. I rarely spoke to him on my own because each time I sought the courage to approach him, I panicked and chickened out.
Chase was so obviously straight, but my sorry ass couldn't help but fancy him.
I lead the tour group away from the T-Rex skeleton, explaining how the meteor shower had caused the dinosaurs to become extinct.
We pass Chase wheeling along a cart of tools and I subconsciously hold my breath for a moment before continuing the tour, but not without sparing a longing glance at the man.
I spot him chatting with another guy that looked about our age.
I draw my attention back to the group when a young girl points out that I was staring into space, I quickly apologise and move on with the tour.
The tour finishes soon after that and I hastily make my way to the loading dock behind the museum, where I see Koda and Chase loading a truck as Shelby tries to convince them to let her go on the dig.
She sits on a crate grumpily and sighs, "Man, i'm never gonna get to go!" she complains before Koda lifts her and the box into the truck, prompting a yelp out of her.
Koda spots me approaching, "Eliott, hey!" He grins, waving animatedly.
"Hey Koda" I mumble, giving a small nervous wave to Chase.
"Miss Morgan!" Shelby suddenly exclaims, jumping off the box. Great, boss is here.
"I think your party in booth four is missing a dinner roll. And no, you can't come-"
"-museum policy" Shelby mirrors Ms Morgan, following her around the truck when she walks away.
"Triceratops' head grew to be seven feet long. Only two of the horns were really bone, one was just ligament...give me a shot Ms Morgan, please? I know as much about dinosaurs as anyone on your crew" Shelby rants matter-of-factly.
