1998
It was a rainy day, people minding their own business and going on with their day. It was a calm, normal afternoon for everyone. Well mostly everyone, along those people was a little girl wandering the wet streets. Scavenging for something to eat, she stopped in front of a small convenience store. She looked around to see if there were people around, which there wasn't. She took a deep breath and walked in.
*Ding*
Ranged the store bell, the clerk looked up to greet the person, but no one was there. He looked around, but didn't see a person in sight. He shrugged his shoulders and went on with his business. Moments later he heard the sound of bags crinkling, he looked up and leaned to look over towards the chip aisle, but again no one was there. He shook his head and resumed his work. Not long after the refreshment door opened, the clerk saw this and immediately stood up to investigate.
As he approached the area, once again, no person was in sight. This made him confused, yet frustrated, thinking it's a teen playing a prank on him. He kept searching around to find the prankster, until the store bell ranged. He looked up and saw a customer waiting up front, he quickly walked behind the counter and helped them. After the transaction, the clerk thanked the customer and went back to searching the store. As the customer left, the girl followed close behind.
After walking for a bit the little girl hid in an alley. Making sure the coast was clear, she turned visible again and sat on top of a box and began eating her stolen goods. As she was finishing up, she heard footsteps coming her way. She looked to her right and saw three men coming towards her. She immediately stood up and started walking in the other direction. When she reached the near end of the alleyway another guy popped out blocking her path.
Beginning to get a bit irritated she turned to the three guys behind her, "Hey there little girl you lost?" one of them asked, "No, I'm not." She tried to go around the guy that was blocking her path, but failed. "Woah, we can't let a girl like you wander the streets alone, let us help you." he said with a sickening smile.
"Look, I appreciate the offer, but I'm fine on my own. Now if you could tell your friend to please move, that would be wonderful.", annoyance laced in her voice. Once more she tried to leave, but this time the guy blocking her grabbed her shoulder harshly, turned her around and held her there. The guy that was talking to her came up to her face, close enough to smell the stench of alcohol and cigarettes. "I wasn't asking if you "needed'' help sweetheart", he said while caressing her cheek. At this point the girl had enough "I tried to tell you nicely." with that she head-budded the guy and kicked the guy holding her shoulders.
The guy that was head budded got up holding his now bloody nose "You'll pay for that you little bitch." he snapped his fingers indicating the two behind him to go after her. The girl only smirked at them, as they neared her she suddenly disappeared. The two came to a halt, confused on what just happened, out of nowhere one of them was pushed to the ground, scaring the other. All of the sudden the other guy was punched in the face and pushed to the wall. Then out of nowhere the girl reappeared, the guy that blocked her path came charging up behind her, but he was frozen in place, unable to move. The girl slowly turned to face him and said, "You could've just moved and all of this could've been avoided." and with that she threw him over her shoulder towards the others causing them to all fall down again.
Unknown to her a certain person was watching the events unfold in front of him. The girl slowly walked up to the men ''Now I suggest that you either walk or run away before this goes any further." giving them a small smile. Within seconds the four of them scrambled onto their feet and ran out of the alley way. She scoffed at them "Nasty shits".
As she was making her way down the streets someone clears their throat from behind. She ignored it and kept walking "Excuse young lady." someone said, she stopped in her tracks, but didn't turn around. "Yes?" she replied "I hope the same thing doesn't happen again" she thought. "I couldn't help but notice what you did back there in the alley way. It was interesting." he said, which confused the girl a bit. "You mean you're not terrified of my abilities?" she asked now facing the man. "Quite the opposite, I find it fascinating, in fact I want to recruit you to my academy.", "Academy?" asked the girl while knitting her eyebrows. "Yes, The Umbrella Academy, a place where I train special children like yourself."
Her eyes widened a bit at this discovery. You mean there are others....just like me?". " Precisely, what do you say?". The girl looked towards the floor thinking about the man's offer. A small smile appeared on her lips, she looked up at the man "I accept", the man smiled at her answer "Come along then, there isn't time to waste." The girl followed, "By the way you never did tell me who you were." The man stopped and looked at her "My name is Reginald Hargreeves", and with that they continued towards the academy.
