Chapter 10: Bucky

Halloween came quickly, and Nicky and Nat were blowing up Bucky's phone the entire day to the point where he decided to just leave work early.

He used the extra time to dig through the very back of their closet until he found a few more costume elements. Once normal work hours came to an end, and Steve got home from work, they headed over to Sam and Rhodey's place.

Bucky had just finished spreading all of his costume pieces out on the table when Nicky arrived in a flourish of garment bags, shopping bags, and two pumpkin shaped cakes, one large and one very small.

Sam followed him into the kitchen and asked, "what's with the two cakes?"

"Well!" Nicky said, depositing his final bag on the kitchen table. "The first is for you two, as a thank you for hosting. Feel free to share with Bucky or keep it all to yourself, I'm sure he'll only be a tiny bit horrendously jealous-"

"Hey!" Bucky protests from where he was already beginning to paw through Nicky's bags.

"-and the tiny one is a smash cake for Lilah!" Nicky said happily.

"What's a smash cake?" Rhodey asked, coming into the room holding pieces of what was shaping up to be a really cool looking huntsman costume.

"It's a cake you give to lil' 'uns and let them smash it! I saw a video of a baby doing a smash cake for their birthday online and she looked absolutely ecstatic! So! I thought Lilah might like it!"

Sam came out from around the kitchen counter and captured Nicky in a huge hug.

"Alright Bucky," Sam said, releasing a flustered looking Nicky, "I guess you can keep him."

Both Bucky and Nicky blushed bright red. The next two hours were a flurry of costume creation that resulted in several of them being tied and or glued into their costumes.

Rhodey's costume consisted of a flowing forest green cape, a tan shirt and khakis, and a very nice looking bow and arrow set. The bow and arrow were high tech looking, and played well off of his leg braces. Apparently he had some friends who did larping and he was able to borrow their cyborg-style bow and arrow for the night.

Steve's costume was actually primarily built by Nicky, who spent the better part of yesterday foraging through their local park to find branches and twigs. With Bucky's help today, they glued them onto a brown v-neck T-shirt, starting by creating shoulder pads that looked like hands, and then traveling down the rest of the shirt to end with a fringe made of twigs. The pants were a pair of old brown khakis that Nicky shredded the bottom of so they looked like they'd been worn walking around the forest. Finally, Nicky brought him a head piece that looked like it may have come from a Julius Caesar costume, but it perfectly rounded out the look.

Sam was wearing a costume he used to wear to their local Renaissance fair, made up of a peasant shirt, leather lace up vest, and flowy tan pants. He paired it with a cape and Nicky once again provided the perfect, braided headpiece to add a flair of magic to the look.

Nicky and Bucky's costumes were the most elaborate. Bucky was wearing the fishnet shirt that Sam had borrowed, and they'd woven fake foliage garlands through it to give the effect that he was actually just wearing the foliage. He had on black jeans, and the foliage continued down, with another two garlands wrapping down around both of his legs, pinned in place with safety pins. He had a pair of green, gauzy fairy wings he put on like a backpack, and a gold and green gilted headpiece finished the look.

Nicky was wearing a long sleeve, flowy white top. Starting on his chest, he had pinned individual fake flowers in an assortment of pinks, reds and purples to make it look like they were spiraling outwards from his heart. The flowers continued down to the bottom of the shirt and onto his pants making the spiral effect huge, and pronounced. His wings were much more intricate than Bucky's, made of a gossamer purple flowing fabric, and his head piece was equally ornate and beautiful.
