"Have you heard about that new disease?"
I'm listening in on my parents' conversation as usual, back and head against the floor. I always did this, but I don't know why. I'm just 'nosey' I guess.
"What, you mean Hanahaki disease?"
"Yeah! Apparently it's killed loads..."
"Yeah, but how exactly? Tell me that, oh, say someone falls in love. Are they gonna magically get this disease?"
"Apparently so! They say thats the worry of it, people as young as 7 have reported cases of it. That's primary crushes turning into something that could kill them."
My dad went silent after this. They did this a lot, one always had to one-up the other.
I sat up, probably too quickly as I felt a small wave of nausea pass over me, in a slightly panicked daze.
I've been love with this boy for a while, but he is just the best! Literally nothing is wrong about him, his personality is the best, and his hair looks so soft, and his eyes are such a nice colour, the clothes he wears fits him so well and-
I cut off my train of thoughts as i feel a tingling warmth climb upto my cheeks. Then I realised - the disease.
Anyone who's in love could get it, and even die from it. I don't want that to happen to me - my crush on him could be dangerous paired with it.
I don't even know much about it, other than three things:• It targets people in love.
• It can kill.
• The larger the crush, the worse the disease. What even is the disease though? Thats my one question.
I stood up slowly, trying not to cause pain as staying in one place for too long isn't really the best. I walked over to my computer, open on discord messages between me and my friend Jimmy.
If you couldn't guess, Jimmy's the guy I'm in love with. Madly in love with.
I quickly shut the messages, still smiling internally about the joke I had made earlier, and opened Google.
My hands lingered over the keyboard, as if unable to process what was being typed into the search bar. Almost a minute later, they skimmed over the keys, occasionally typing in letter after letter until it hit the search bar.
My face was instantly flooded with news story after news story,
'TEENS IN LOVE HIT WITH SUDDEN DISEASE''IS THERE A CURE FOR THIS LOVE DISEASE?'
'ANOTHER DIES FROM THIS DEADLY DISEASE'
I scrolled down, my eyes scanning all the news sites until I scrolled onto links. I trailed over links uncertainly, after finding one that interested me.
I clicked onto it, scanning through the cookies agreement and agreeing. What I read at first was pretty simple, 'Thorned Cupid's disease, also known as Hanahaki disease, is a disease that affects a person in love; symptoms of this include:
• Random "butterflies in your chest" feelings.
• Flowers randomly entering your thoughts
• Coughing up/throwing up petals or flowers. These flowers can be your loved one's favourite flower, favoirite colour, a flower they're named after, a flower based off their personality or overall person, things along those lines.
The more intense the love, the more pain it will bring.
Slight love can be flowers such as:
•Daisies
•Dandelions
•Buttercups
•Unthorned poppies
•Tulips
•Blossoms,However, more intense love can be flowers like:
•Thorned roses
•Bougainvilleas
•Durantas
•Hollies
•Hawthorns
•Locusts
•Pyracanthas
•Silverthorns
•Firethorns. If you think you have this disease, please contact a doctor as soon as you can.
This can be cured in two ways: Having the other person love you, or surgery.
The surgery can be a good option, but there's always a downside to things. If the surgery is taken, all memories of the lover will be gone, as if they never happened. You will forget everything about them.
However, the love option isn't always the best option. You could find out they have a lover, or they're not into you. Negativity/signs of not loving you can deepen the pain of the flower, worsening the condition.
Please be safe, as this disease is, in some cases, deadly'
I read, eyes wide and mouth open. My stomach churned, in a butterflies sort of way. I didn't notice this straight away, but this is when all of it would start. The start of the worst months of my life.
