"We're both gonna die," Kate said, hand on one of the railings of the fire escape. "What the hell do you wanna know so bad?"
Emily resisted the urge to shove her. She didn't need to be caught murdering a person. "Questions later," She said, already feeling herself wanting to sit down. She could hear the scraping of her shoes against the metal steps and the annoying noise of cars honking way below them. "Besides we're on the twelfth-floor it's too late for questions."
"I should have known you would never tell me," Kate muttered, already a tiny bit higher than Emily. Emily huffed (though she privately agreed). Kate jumped into the balcony. Emily followed, making sure to make no noise. Breaking into your boss' house wasn't the best thing to do.
The balcony was decorated elegantly. A plant climbed the length of the wall and made an arch right above the door frame. The curtains were embroidered from what she could see. The curtains of the windows were open. Gary (her boss) had his computer open and Emily could distinctly see (since it was the end of the month) him deciding who to chuck out or not. He came to her name. Her heart started beating faster and she saw Kate's eyebrows furrow further. "Yes," Emily whisper-shouted as she saw him rate her as fine. Not the best, but she'd messed up someone's order the previous week (ugh) and she'd thought she'd get fired since she had missed a whole week. Kate raised an eyebrow. "I'm not fired," Emily shook her friend's shoulders as Kate responded.
"That's gr-" Kate then stepped back. "Are you kidding me? You ruined my beauty sleep to see if you would be fired?" Kate crossed her arms petulantly. Her hair was wavy in the dark night and her figure was outlined by light due to the moon.
Emily shrugged, feeling a strand of her hair loosen from the tight french braid she had made earlier in the day. Not that it mattered since it had already loosened up two hours back. "We need to go,"
"No shit," Kate nodded, already running down the fire escape. "There's an empty house there, we go into that and get out through the elevator."
"Superhero training shit, this is why I made you come," Emily said, shrugging and running off the fire escape as well. Getting onto the balcony right below this one, they sneaked through the opened windows and realised that the house wasn't even sold till that time. They got out through the door and quickly ran for the elevators.
Emily fidgeted as the lift took a while to come and as soon as it came, they pressed the button rapidly. She felt something in her pocket and, taking it out, saw her emergency stash of skittles. She opened it, and said grandly, "here's to a victory." And handed one of them to Kate.
"Cheers," Kate nudged her skittle with Emily's and dropped it into her mouth. "At least you shared your emergency stash. Now answers?" Kate wasn't going to let it go, even when the elevator stopped. "Fine." Emily sighed exasperated, her boots not making a sound on the tiled floor.
As they stepped out of the apartment door, Emily could smell the slight tinge of pollution but behind it all, she could feel the fresh air. (Even if just a bit). It'd been better since it rained a day back, or else Emily was sure it would've been way worse.
"I didn't attend my job for a week," Emily said, already gearing up to tell a story before Kate gracefully interrupted. "Another proof you have amnesia."
"I do not you absolute," Emily shot back at her friend. Who remained utterly ignorant of her protests. "You don't just randomly forget what happened for around a week you know," Kate shrugged, deciding that proved her point.
"I was busy doing stuff, I think," Emily shrugged. "You didn't come to meet me for that whole week as far as I remember," Kate crossed her arms. "You have amnesia then, I'm sure I did," Emily said since they met almost every single day. (Though Kate hadn't exactly got a job by then and Emily had and they met less but still.) "Also on second thoughts you should come work with me."
"You complain about Gary every day," Kate said, her voice echoing in the empty ground. She took out the keys to the small apartment they shared, and gave an appreciative look to the sign saying 'Emily Parker and Kate Bishop' before entering.
Emily wiped her feet on the mat and shoved Kate. Gary wasn't that bad (He was most of the time but what Kate didn't know wouldn't hurt her). She was lonely as hell in that job.
"Food I beg of you," Kate shouted, collapsing on their already tearing couch. ("It adds personality-" Emily argued.) "I have better things to do."
Emily walked towards the fridge, and said, "No you don't. Was any of the bread pizza I made for lunch remaining?" She was starving and predicted that Kate was too. Before opening the fridge she took a glass and filled it with water and sat on the slab sipping it with relish.
"No idea what happened to it." Kate said, her eyes wandering over to the kitchen sink. "You absolute asshole. You actually," Emily crossed her arms and put down her glass of water. "You had it when I was at work!" Emily took a stool (totally not only for her) and after climbing on it took out a pack of cookies that Kate's friend had given to them. "I'm having this."
"That is so not fair on so many different levels. That's mine." Kate jumped up from the couch. "Catch me if you can Bishop," Emily called back, running up to their sleeping area and closing the door quickly.
"That's just mean now," Kate shouted, banging at the door. "Come on, I need food. And sleep."
"The couch is calling for you," Emily replied, "Look in the top cupboard. How much stuff have your friend's given you I swear?"
"At least I have friends," Kate snarked back after hearing the exaggerated crunch of the cookies through their thin wooden door.
"Fine," Emily drawled and opened the door, dusting the cookie crumbs from her hands.
"I should've guessed," kate pouted, looking at the empty cookie packet.
