New limited edition handbags, new high-end make up collections, beautiful women modelling Jimmy Choos, photos of couples enjoying a luxurious cruise on their yacht, your instagram feed was full of things you hadn't seen before but knew instantly, you wanted them.
You looked up for a moment to see that everyone else in the lecture hall was also on their phone, barely anyone was paying attention, let alone taking notes. While you usually made sure you got everything down, this was without exception the most boring class this whole semester and you'd heard from one other people who had taken it before that the exam was fairly easy and all you had to do is attend and know the basic gist of the texts he uploaded for the class.
A few other people left early but you stayed until the end, heading out with everyone else once he ended the lecture. You checked the time on your phone, content that you had enough time to make it to your nail appointment and pushed your big sunglasses from your hair back down onto your face when you headed outside and the sun blinded you.
You walked off campus and took a cab to your favourite nail salon that you'd gotten a gift card for a whole year for your birthday, because for yourself, you could never afford this salon. As you stepped in, one of the girls greeted you with a wave.
"Girl, I'll be right with you."
You smiled politely at her and waited, fumbling in your handbag for your gift card to show her. She was just packing some supplies away before she came to front.
"Where's your cute boyfriend that came with you last time?" She asked with a wink as she put a stamp on your gift card.
You waved it off, shaking your head. "Oh, no, no, he's not my boyfriend" you clarified. "It's a little ... well, complicated..."
She laughed, nodding knowingly. "We've all been there" she said. "So, take a seat, what're we doing today? We just got in a new set of gels yesterday, let me show you!" She said and pulled a small sheet with different looks from the drawer under the table. "Look, I did this pastel blue on a customer this morning and then I'm wearing the pink one myself" she said, showing you her nails.
"I really like the pastel purple ones with the sparkle" you told her. "The round ones. But not as long as yours, please."
She laughed. "Alright" she grinned and set everything up that she needed, beginning on your nails, chatting and telling you about this and that while she worked.
As you sat in the cab on the way back to your apartment, you posted a photo of your nails onto your instagram and scrolled through before you suddenly saw a photo you didn't enjoy quite as much as the Chanel bags above and the rose bouquet your friend had gotten for her birthday below. In fact, you didn't enjoy it at all. Why did you follow Alex's friends again?
In the photo, there was a group of people and had you not scrolled back up to make sure, you would have missed him, sitting in the back, some random girl sitting very close to him, if you weren't mistaken, in his lap. You'd met most of the people in the photo before, Miles having taken and uploaded this selfie, but that girl, you had not seen before.
Not only had he told you he couldn't come over last night when you'd texted him, he had clearly been at some party. There was of course nothing wrong with him going to parties, and there was nothing wrong with him sitting very close with random girls at said parties, he wasn't your boyfriend after all, as you'd so determinedly told the woman at the nail salon.
You put your phone into your bag and were relieved to see you'd reached your place, quickly paying the driver before getting out and into the building to take the lift up to your apartment. There was really no reason for you to overreact, you told yourself. There was no reason to react at all. Alex could do whatever he wanted. Just like you could do whatever you wanted.
