February 4th, 20xx, 12:00 p.m.
My last day begins like any other.
Afternoon sunlight shines through my glossy bedroom window. My phone's blaring alarm awakens me.
My eyes drift open as I regain consciousness from my slumber. I slowly stand up from my mattress and turn off the alarm. "WAKE UP! SENIOR YEAR FLIGHT TODAY!!! - 12:00 p.m." The alarm message reads.
I turn off the alarm before grabbing some clothes from my drawer, deciding to wear a black T-shirt and jeans. I also wear a coffee-brown coat since planes usually get very cold once in the air, and New York to London is a long flight. I quickly ensure I have everything before I swing my duffel bag over my shoulder and head downstairs.
"Morning, Claire." I hear my mother say as I reach the main floor. I look into the kitchen, where my mom, Elizabeth, stands. She turns to me, eating from a plate of homemade pancakes as she speaks again.
"So, today's your big trip. London... For my senior year trip, we just went to the Six Flags nearby." Elizabeth says in a condescending tone before taking another bite from her pancakes.
"You're just jealous." I proclaim with a smirk. Elizabeth jokingly replies, "Damn right I am," taking the final bite from her pancakes. Just as I'm ready to leave the apartment to catch the bus to the airport, Elizabeth stops me.
"Oh! The school called me... The bus to the airport broke down, so I'll drive you." Elizabeth explains. I groan in annoyance. Just my luck, I guess. "Okay..." I respond disappointedly, resisting the urge to smash my head into a wall.
The trip is supposed to be a class trip! No parents, nobody to helicopter me for the entire ride to JFK airport, just me! Ugh, I fucking hate public school buses.
As I double-check everything, Elizabeth continues to bug me. At least once I'm at the airport and on the plane, it'll be a whole week alone.
"You're sure you have everything, Claire? ID, passport, pepper spray?" Elizabeth annoyingly asks, as if the world will end if I forget a single thing. I get she's just being a mom and wanting me to be safe, but can't she trust me for a few seconds?
"Mom! I have everything. I'm going to be fine. Please stop worrying so much about me." I exclaim in slight frustration, just wanting to get my senior year trip underway.
Elizabeth sighs, "Let's go then."
We leave our apartment building and enter Elizabeth's car. The car engine sputters as it starts up. Finally, I'm on my way to the airport.
