I woke to pitch-black. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I realized I didn't know where I was. I could tell that I was moving but I couldn't decipher which direction. I was so disoriented and I didn't know where I was, who I was, or where I had come from. In fact, I couldn't remember anything. I started to panic. I crawled around aimlessly trying to find a way out of this metal cage I was in. I was surrounded on all sides with thick wire strung to make a box. I was so scared I couldn't scream. I crouched in a corner, closed my eyes, and wished for it all to end.
Suddenly, the moving stopped. I opened my eyes and looked to the roof of the box, which was starting to open. When it opened all the way, I was almost blinded by the blast of light that stung my eyes. Surrounding the box were a number of teenage boys, covered in dirt and wearing ragged clothes. One of them, who looked about 15, with extremely arched eyebrows and a nose that looked like his nostrils were permanently flared, jumped into the box.
He looked at me, confused. "It's a girl," he told the others."A girl?" the boys exclaimed. I shrank away from the dozens of faces gawking at me like I was the weirdest thing they'd ever seen.
The eyebrow boy grabbed me by the arms and pulled me out of the box and onto the grass in front of the boys.
"Where am I?" I asked, panicking once more. "Who are you? Why can't I remember who I am?"
A tall, African-American boy with a buzz cut who looked about eighteen said, "Calm down. It will all make sense in a moment. Now, I need you to come with us."The African-American boy and the boy with the eyebrows grabbed me by my wrists, pulled me up off the ground, and led me to a hut by the trees. I was too dazed to struggle. They pushed me lightly into a wooden chair in the hut and the eyebrow boy left, giving me a look of confusion as he went.
"Can you tell me anything? Your name?" the tall boy asked.
I shook my head and demanded, "Why don't you tell me yours?"
He chuckled and replied, "My name is Alby. Don't worry, you'll get your name back in a day or two. It's the only thing they let us keep."
I tilted my head slightly and asked, "What is this place? And who put us here?"
"This," Alby gestured out the door of the hut. "This is the Glade. We don't know why we were put here and we haven't found a way to leave yet but don't give up. We have a well-run society and we don't want the first girl messing it up."
I groaned in my head. I was the only girl? This was great.Alby proceeded to give me a tour of the Glade. There were huge walls surrounding it, and one small entrance to what lay beyond the walls at the north side.
"What's out there?" I asked, pointing to the large cement barriers.
Alby glanced at me, then at the small entrance. "You'll find out later," he said. I groaned. What was it with all the secrecy? He introduced me to the other Gladers. There were jobs in the Glade so everything was kept running smoothly. Gardeners, slicers, cooks, med-jacks, builders, and runners.
The boy with the eyebrows' name was Gally. He kept staring at me for some reason, and it made me uncomfortable. Gally was the keeper of the builders.
The keeper of the med-jacks was a scrawny, dark skinned boy named Jeff.
There was only one cook, and his name was Frypan. He looked similar to Jeff, with darker hair and he was taller.
The keeper of the slicers was Winston, a short Hispanic boy with a large nose.
The keeper of the gardeners was Zart, a tall boy with white blond hair.
Second in command to Alby was a tall, dirty blond haired boy with a British accent named Newt. I took a liking to him. He was the most welcoming and kindest of the Gladers, not to mention he was pretty attractive. He made me feel at home. After the tour, all of the Gladers lined up outside the kitchen to collect a serving of Frypan's stew. As I was the newest arrival (or Greenie, as the Gladers called me) I was the guest of honor at the bonfire that night.
I wasn't completely comfortable with all the new faces yet, so I went to sit behind a log bench to eat my stew as the boys laughed and cheered. Not that much later, however, Newt noticed me sitting alone and took a seat beside me.
