'And, what is so interesting about this organism, is that it-'
BRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING
The shrill shriek of the bell nearly made me jump out of my seat, and snapped me out of my day-dreamy haze. Our teacher, Mr.Clark, stopped his lecture.
'Ah. Saved by the bell. Don't forget to finish section 12 in your textbooks! This will be covered on the test next week. Have a good lunch break, everyone!'
Everyone shot up from their seats, and, after shoving everything in their bags, practically bolted into the hall.
I too was shoving everything in my bag, and was preparing to follow suite out the door.
'Y/n. Just a moment.'
Ah Damn.
'Uh, yes sir?'
The expression in Mr.Clark's eyes was soft and he smiled gently. He was leaning on the the blackboard, the projected image putting an array of different animal cells on his right hip.
'Sorry if this is a little sudden, but I have a tradition to check up on new students after the first lesson.'
'Oh, ok. That's-that's No problem.'
What's going on?
Is there something wrong?
Is it me?
Am I failing?
What's wrong with me?
'So, how are you doing? Is the work easy enough?'
'Oh, yes, the worksheet was fine, a-as well as the notes and, uh, stuff.'
'That's good. Do you like science?'
I felt my eyes begin to sting.
'I uh, yeah, well, um I used too.'
There was a slight pause, before he hums gently.
'Well, if you ever get that knack for science back, there's a little fair/competition around August.' He turns around and picks up a pamphlet. It looks a little bit worn, with creases and little rips around the edges. It reads:
Hawkins is proud to let you know we're bringing back our annual science fair!
Time: August 14th-21st
Location: Hawkins Middle School Gymnasium
- Competitions!
-Games!
-Prizes!
'There should be an announcement about it in the next assembly, but this is just a heads up if you want an extra start with your project.'
'Project?' I echo.
He points to a paragraph near the bottom of the page.
This years theme:
Living organisms!
Complete a hypothesis, research, experiment, and reflection related to the theme, and prepare a tri-fold to present to a group of judges!
Prizes:
1st- Your experiment is presented in a state competition, as well as $45 dollars, and a 1st place ribbon.
2nd- $20 , and a 2nd place ribbon
3rd- $10, and a 3rd place ribbon
4th- $5, and a 4th place ribbon
5th and below- Participation certificate and a candy-goody bag.
'Oh. Cool.' I say, handing the pamphlet back to him. 'Is this why you're teaching Biology this unit?'
He nods. 'I wanted the people interested to already have a general idea of the science topic, so they'd have more creative freedom when picking an experiment.'
'I...see. C-could I, uh, take a pamphlet? I uh, I have a terrible memory and if something isn't staring me in the face- like uh, like if I don't see it cause I don't write things down- I mean I do! I just haven't bought a planner recently caused we only unpacked our stuff like two days ago and-'
Oh my god. Shut up. He doesn't need to hear about your pathetic life choices.
'Whoa, whoa, slow down. Yes, you can have the pamphlet.'
'Ah ok, th-thank you sir.' I turned to the door and put my hand on the doorknob.
'No worries. Let me know if you want any help with your project.'
After opening the door, I took one more look at him and nodded. 'Will do', I said. 'Thank you sir.'
When I stepped out, the halls were mostly quiet, with a distant sound of chatter coming from the cafeteria.
Right, Lunch.
........
Do I have anything to eat?
.......
No?
Crap.
