How could I forget my lunch?
What was I going to do??
Do I have money? I check my pockets, my fingers brushing against lint and a pack of gum before they make contact with something metal-cool .
There. I fish out my hands and check the amount.
1.......6.......31.......65......100 cents!
So I have at least 1 dollar. That's good. Checking my other pocket, I fish out another dollar and 15 cents.
Ok, not too bad, let's see what I can get from the cafeteria.
But do you really wanna walk in late? People are gonna stare at you.
What? No they aren't. They'll be doing there own thing.
They might, you walked in late. What if they think you're the school weirdo?
But I'm just some nobody. They won't even know who I am if anyone actually looks.
Ah. You're right. You are a nobody. Even if they did look, they wouldn't see anything special.
Wha-? That's-that's not what I meant-
If you want to eat anything, hurry up. Lunch won't last forever.
......Fine.
As I opened the double doors to the cafeteria, I was struck with a thought from this morning. You know when I said the place reeked?
Add the sound level equal to stampeding elephants to that observation, plus blinding strobe lights, and that's the cafeteria.
I made my way to the long line near the front of the cafeteria, and tried to get a better look at my surroundings.
There were those long rectangle tables, with circle seats. Most of them were along the walls in rows, but some people had pushed them out of alignment to sit in other areas. Despite this, most people weren't sitting on the chairs. They were sitting on tables, window isles, and even the floor, with food splatters painting almost half the room in a plethora of green, brown, and white, giving me a hint to today's food choices.
After grabbing my tray, I sat down in the area I deemed the cleanest and the most people-free.
Plopping down on the floor, I flipped through the pages of my science textbook, and was about to take a bite of food when a voice made me jump.
'I wouldn't eat that if I were you.'
I looked up. This boy looks familiar....is he in my class?
'Seriously, it's gonna give you food poisoning for the next, like, 2 weeks.'
Despite how friendly he looked, I felt weary.
What if he's making fun of you? I leaned to the side, looking past him to see if there was anyone staring or giggling.
And there was. A small group of people, maybe around 5? Were looking at me and the boy, or more so in the direction of us.
As soon as they saw me staring back, heads swiveled in the other direction.
I looked back at the boy in front of me. 'Uh, thank you', I began. 'But I think I'll take my chances.'
The curly-haired boy shook his head. 'As a new kid, I forbid you from making the - ''I ate cafeteria food that'll leave me bedridden for the last weeks of school''- It is not as pleasant as it sounds.'
'I...uh..'
Now more people were staring. I felt my insides turn to jello.
'Hey-uh- maybe not so loud?' I stammered. He seemed to get the hint, and quieted his voice. 'But seriously, I've got food you can eat-we, have food you can eat.'
'We?' I echoed.
He reached out his hand and pulled me up. 'This way.'
I followed him to a table, and when we reached it, he swung out his hands.
'This is the gang.'
