"Are you out of your mind?" Steve yelled.

It wasn't a foolproof plan, sure, but it was better than nothing.

"Do you have any suggestions?" I demanded.

Steve still looked agitated, but he kept his mouth shut.

"Look" I continued, "Hold on the bars over your shoulders, okay? Hold on as tight as you can as we drop, and once we get to the bottom, let go and jump off before the ride begins to lift the seats up again."

I knew it was a lot to ask, but it was all I had. I couldn't see any other way out. Steve may have appeared agitated, but I could see helpless despair behind his eyes. "You got that?" I asked him, needing a confirmation from him that he understood what I was saying. He nodded stiffly.

I craned my neck to look at Lucy Two, who was teetering on the brink of a full on panic attack.

"Hey. Hey," I said firmly, trying to get her to focus on me. I needed her to stay calm if she was going to get back to the ground in one piece. Lucy Two didn't seem to hear me.

"Hey. What's your name?" I asked her, hoping an easy, familiar question would be able to bring her down a few notches.

She finally looked over at me, her eyes as wide as the moon. "Monica," she told me shakily.

"Okay, Monica," I said, trying to assert some authority in order to comfort her. I was unsure of how effective my efforts were; her terrified expression stayed frozen in place.

"Okay?" I said sharply, still hoping to snap her out of her trance.

Monica nodded.

"We're going to be okay," I assured her, although I really didn't know it was the truth. Ultimately, I needed her to stay calm. Panicking would do nothing but diminish her chances of walking away from this alive. "I just need you to hold your bar over your shoulders, okay?"

As I attempted to instill even a thread of confidence in Monica, our seats suddenly dropped down a few more inches, causing her to scream before breaking out into tears. A chorus of gasps and screams echoed up toward us from the still growing crowd below.

"Hold on!" I yelled. I knew the drop had to be coming at any moment. I continued to grip my bar with my left hand and Monica's with my right. We were running out of time.

The High Dive shuddered violently, jostling us in our seats, before - finally - plunging us to the ground.
