"hope you have a
nice day miggy!"AS ESME WALKED INTO THE LIBRARY, spotted her sister browsing through the books. She sighed and started to turn away, but Sam called out.
"Wait, Esme." Sam pleaded.
"I'm not even in the mood," Esme stated, trying to walk off.
Sam grabbed her arm. "Look, I'm sorry. I should've done something."
"You've been watching your friends bully Aisha for weeks. If you really wanted to help, you would've done something by now." Esme said bluntly, pulling her arm away from her, "Friends don't just stand by while others get picked on."
The two stared at each other silently before Esme spoke again, "You're trying your hardest to stay relevant with a group of stuck-up girls who don't care about you."
Sam rolled her eyes and shook her head. "They're my friends, Esme."
"Well, they're not mine. So I don't really care." Esme said, sarcasm filling her voice as she did.
Esme's annoyance was evident, and soon tried to walk away, but Sam stopped her. "What are you doing?" Esme asked.
"Shh..." Sam whispered, peeking around the bookshelves.
"We were just leaving," Miguel said, standing up with his friends as they tried to leave. They were close to escaping when Kyler grabbed Eli by the neck, forcing him to face him.
"Where are you going?" Kyler sneered, making Eli flinch. "Look at this freak. What girl would ever kiss this?"
"Leave him alone, Kyler," Miguel said, stepping up. Kyler's attention shifted to Miguel. Esme tried to leave, but Sam held her back, eyes glued to the scene. She refused to let Kyler hurt Miguel the same way he had at the dance.
"Had enough, Rhea?" Kyler shoved Eli, almost making him fall. "Get out of here."
Demetri's backpack ended up in the trash, Eli was taunted, and more. Esme grabbed Sam's arm and pulled her toward the library exit, desperate to get away from the scene.
Once they were outside the library, Esme scoffed. "I can't believe you let that jerk into our house." Her voice boomed.
"I didn't know—"
Esme pulled her hand up at the girl, cutting her off, "I warned you about him. Did you know that your boyfriend beat up a guy for no reason the night of the dance? He's a bully. Your friends are bullies. That makes you one too." Esme shouted with emphasis.
"Stop blaming me. It's not my fault. I'll try to fix it!" Sam's voice trembled, though she tried to stay calm.
Esme folded her arms, unfazed. "No, Samantha. You're done. You've had so much time to fix things before this all happened, and you did."
"It's not like I told Kyler to beat up an innocent boy— this isn't fair. I'm not to blame for his actions." She claimed, "Maybe I should've been more careful, but I don't know what you want from me!"
Esme took a deep breath, trying to control herself, "Be a better person, maybe." She threw her hands up in defeat and walked away, leaving Sam behind.
. . .
The school day ended, and students were pouring out. Esme, rushing to leave with Jude, bumped into someone. "Watch where you're going—" Esme started, then looked up. "Miguel— Braces! I've been looking for you all day," Esme said, glancing at Jude. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine—"
"Miggy!" His mom called from the car, honking the horn.
Miguel looked embarrassed, giving a small, awkward smile to the girls. "Gotta go. My mom's here." He turned and walked toward the car.
Esme chuckled as she watched him leave. "Hope you have a great day, Miggy!" Jude shouted, earning a small glare from Miguel.
"Stop teasing him!" Esme slapped Jude's arm playfully before leading her to the car. Though Esme didn't have much time to check on Miguel, his smile and breathing reassured her that he'd be okay.
"it's such a lovely
day, we should pocket
the sunshine."-
