Alice
"Must we go? I doubt they'll notice if we never arrive" Alice asked her mother. "they will notice" replied her mother as She re-ties her waist sash, feeling for her daughters corset. "Where's your corset?" asked her mother She pulls back Alice's baby blue dress to see Alice's bare legs. "And no stockings!" she said in an angry manner. "I'm against them" Alice revealed. "But you're not properly dressed!" lectured her mother. "Who's to say what is proper? What if it was agreed that "proper" was wearing a codfish on your head? Would you wear it?" questioned Alice. "Alice" her mother spoke in a warning tone. "To me a corset is like a codfish" exclaimed Alice. "Please, I beg of you. Not today". Extremely Frustrated, Alice looks out the window and mutters "Father would have laughed". noticing that she has hurt her mother Alice immediately apologized "I'm sorry. I'm tired. I didn't sleep well last night". "Did you have bad dreams again? It sure has been a while" spoke her mother softly. "Only one. It's always the same ever since I can remember. Do you think that's normal? Don't most people have different dreams?" Alice's mother looks at her daughter with a concerned look as she took off some of her own jewelry and put it on Alice. "I don't know darling. There! You're beautiful. Now, can you manage to smile?" Alice is able to force a smile, but she truly does not want to go to this silly party. "And besides, one of your old friends will be there" her mother spoke up again. Alice knew she didn't really have many friends growing up so she was puzzled, "who?" she asked. "Oh you know, that little L/n girl, the one you got along with so well?". Alice thought for a moment, "do you mean Y/n L/n? I haven't spoken with her in a long while" it had been some time since Alice and Y/n Had spoken, they were once such close friends. But as the years went by, they lost touch. Alice missed Y/n dearly, Y/n didn't judge Alice the way other people did. Y/n was kind and compassionate, and had a few screws loose. "I heard that she has seriously cleaned up her act" stated mrs Kingsley. "We shall see about that" answered Alice.
Y/n
"Mother why must we go to this silly engagement party?" Y/n groaned. "Stop whining, don't you want to be supportive of your friend?" Mrs L/n scoffed "and what on earth are you wearing! that dress is far too short!" she yelped. "Mother it's one of my favorites, and it just looked absolutely darling with this necklace" Y/n swooned at her outfit, she believed that she looked just like the wealthy women in the photographs. "M/n my dear she's almost nineteen, Let her choose her own clothing." Her father spoke. Mr L/n had always been the more lenient parent, far less strict than Mrs. L/n. He had always encouraged Y/n's imagination, and he knew he could never change the way his daughter was. He didn't need to, his daughter was wondrous, creative, and a little bit odd. But that was okay, because she didn't need to change herself for anyone. "Mother, My dress is at a perfectly perfect length, I don't see anything wrong with it". "It is improper! Don't forget that you are a lady, and a very pretty one indeed! no man will want to marry an inappropriately dressed wenc-" before she could finish her husband interrupted. "M/N!" "mother You believe that everything is improper, what if being proper was wearing a dress made entirely out of cockroaches? would you wear that then? " Y/n joked. "Y/n m/n L/n you better watch your tongue young lady!" "my love she was only kidding" her father defended. "F/n just for once in your life can you take my side? she's not a child anymore!" Mrs L/n rose her voice. "then stop treating her like one!" y/n's father snapped back. Y/n's parents had been on the brink of divorce for years, always teeter tottering back and forth. One day they could tolerate each other, and the next they were an each others throats. Their marriage was arranged after all, and that kind of marriage usually never lasts. But somehow they have been able to live with each others flaws for all these years. The truth is, is that her parents didn't want to be viewed as a couple of failures. They knew they weren't perfect but a divorce would just open up a wound that they couldn't fix, their reputations would be ruined for the rest of their days. Y/n attempted to change the subject, "so Alice is getting married hm?" "well not yet" her mother stated. "what do you mean?" Y/n wondered. "she means that Hamish boy hasn't asked her to marry him yet" her father butted in. "then why celebrate? what if she says no?" Y/n said concerned. "well hopefully she says yes, lady ascot has been planning this event for almost twenty years!" her father said again. "oh that would just be dreadful, and it would be a waste of a three hour trip" Her mother told. "is that your biggest concern?" y/n said sarcastically. "why yes it is"."lets hope she says yes then" Mr L/n chortled, amused by his wife's strange concerns. Y/n truly couldn't wait for this carriage trip to be over, for more reasons than one
