Chapter Two

Awoken

Light began to creep across my eyes as I forced the heavy eyelids open. My body was rigid and clammy all over, making any little movement I tried to accomplish almost impossible.

When I'd finally won the battle with my heavy eyelids, the room around me spun. My head ached along with the rest of my body and my chest hurt with every breath. I tried to move many times, being restricted by my unresponsive body. What was to become of me now?

I looked around the room, noticing the familiarity of the things around me. I was in my bedroom, tucked into my old bed. A chair had been pulled up to my bedside and a dark haired boy with his hand resting over mine was sleeping on it.

"Jamie," I whispered in a hoarse voice.

His body responded quickly, jerking upwards and staring straight into my eyes. He looked at me in disbelief, as though he didn't believe what he was seeing before him. When he finally came to terms with things, he broke into a wide grin.

"You're alive," he breathed, throwing his arms around me.

The moment he moved my body pain erupted from my abdomen and suddenly I was back under the trapdoor, dying beside a soldier with Jamie's wide tear filled eyes looking down on me. I blinked and found myself back in my room.

Footsteps began to echo down the hall, which resulted in Jamie springing away from me. Only moments later, Candice appeared in the doorway with a glass of water. She looked at me with confusion just like Jamie had before smiling.

"Talk about a miracle," she laughed, handing me the water.

Somehow my body responded when I went to move my arm and I took the water from her, before gulping it down quickly. Once I was done with it, I handed her the empty glass, taking her by surprise.

"What happened after I was stabbed?" I asked.

"Well when we heard the gunshot we were worried," Candice said, sitting beside me. "By the time the rest of us got to the cellar, Jamie and Nigel were kneeling over you and we thought you were dead by the looks on their faces. Luckily Bella got right into fixing you. Still, the more time that went past the more we thought you'd never wake up."

"Bella did this?" I asked, motioning to the thick bandages wrapped around my waist.

"She's very observant," Candice laughed. "Once she got over all the blood and stuff she was really good. It was like she went into her own little world."

"Guess we really do have angels watching over us hey," I smiled.

"Well, I'd be annoyed if Kael, Braden and Gordon were just sitting around up there while we did all the work," Jamie joked.

"But Esther, there's something that you should know," Candice said, biting her lip.

"What?" I asked, trying to sit up and failing.

"Koby blames himself for what happened to you," she explained. "He hasn't been himself since you were shot and we're all really worried about him."

"Where is he now?" I asked.

"I'll go and get him," she said, leaving the room.

As soon as she'd disappeared from sight, Jamie whisked me back into his arms, holding me tight to his chest. He held me for just a few moments, before pulling away and looking so deep into my eyes it was as though he was searching my soul.

"Please don't ever do anything like that to me again," he pleaded.

Then he kissed me so hard and so passionately that it was as though he was saying goodbye. Unlike any other kiss we'd shared before, this one exploded with so much passion and love that I felt light headed. When he finally pulled away, I was gasping for air and I noticed a single tear had fallen from his eyes.
