I woke up sore. My entire body ached, especially my neck which hurt so much that i could barely turn it left or right. On the plus side, at least it finally stopped raining.

I stood up slowly and began to stretch my body. Then, I pulled out a granola bar from my backpack and gobbled it down. I was starving and I knew that I couldn't just survive on granola bars and trail mix but I guess it would have to do for now.

I sat down on the hay stack and began to think of what I was gonna do now, where I was gonna go. I had no clue-

"Qui est-ce que tu es? [Who are you?]" I heard a woman's voice ask from behind me. I turned around and there stood a teenager who seemed to be maybe only a year or two older than I - she was about 18, I would say. She wasn't tall nor short. She wasn't thin nor fat; she was curvy. She was black and her eyes were the color of black coffee. The color of her hair, which she wore in cornrows, matched that of her eyes. Her youthful face glowed in the sun. She was very pretty but she stared at me through narrowed eyes and she wore a scowl on her face.

"Qui est-ce que tu es? [Who are you?]" she repeated, briefly pausing between each word.

"Uh...," I began. I'm pretty sure she was speaking French. I studied French every year of high school but I still did not understand it very well.

"Moi, je ne parle pas français bien, [I don't speak French well]" I managed to say. "Tu... tu parles anglais? [Do you speak English?]" I asked. I sure hoped she did.

"Yes, I do," she replied. She had a noticeable accent, however. "I asked who are you? Why are you here?"

"I'm uh... well, my name's Hayley. And uh, I'm just...," I didn't know whether to tell the truth or a lie, "well, I just needed protection from the storm last night and sooo..."

"And so you decided to just take shelter here?" she stated, more than asked. "Have you no home?"

"I uh... I don't."

She just looked at me with an expression of inquiry for a moments.

"Come with me," she ordered. She took my hand began leading me down the trail that connected the barn to her house.

"Wait! I forgot my backpack!" I said. I quickly turned around and put it over my shoulder.

"Come," she ordered once more.

We reached the back porch of her house. "My parents are not home right now. They won't return until tomorrow. Come." She beckoned for me to enter and shut the door behind me.

"You need to clean yourself up. You have hay in your hair."

Before I could reply, she took my hand once more and lead me through the kitchen and down some stairs that lead to a completely furnished basement.

She pointed to the room right in front of the staircase. "That is the bathroom. Go. Shower."

I did. I felt awkward. I mean, I was grateful, but this was strange. I wondered why she was inviting me into her home. Me, a stranger.

Once I finished showering, I left the bathroom and she took me back upstairs into the kitchen and made me toast and eggs which I devoured quickly as she just watched.

"You really have no home?" she asked as soon as I swallowed my last bite.

"No, not really."

"Where are you from?"

"Pennsylvania."

"Then how have you gotten all the way down here?"

"Down where?"

She just stared at me incredulously.

"You don't know where you are?"

"...No."

"You're in Louisianna."

I didn't know what to think. I just sat there, silently.

"Where are you going?" she inquired after a few moments of silence.

"No idea," I stated simply.

"Hmm," she said with a pensive look on her face, "you certainly can't stay here. Well, not after tomorrow that is. Not after my parents return."

"Why did you bring me here?" I blurted out rather unintentionally.

"Because... you look very... you look like a lost puppy. I felt bad."

"Oh...," was all I could say.

"You can stay here tonight," she finished what was she was saying before I interrupted.

The rest of the day passed surprisingly quickly; she gave me a tour of the house and the farm and introduced me to all the animals. I even got to pet her border collie, Max.

It was completely dark by the time we returned to her home. I went to the bathroom and changed into some pajamas while she made me a bed on her floor next to her bed.

"By the way," she began to say, "I'm Jacqueline."

Soon after, we both quickly fell into deep sleep. I was exhausted.
