It was both horrifying and exhilarating to watch as the sea serpent, which seemed to only grow more horrible the longer Otto had to look at it, reared up as Edmund shone the torch in the beast's remaining eye. It turned to face directly with the dragon head prow where the boy was crouched. "Try and kill me! Come on I'm here!" Edmund taunted. Otto stashed his stolen sword on his belt and skidded across the deck towards the stairs leading to the prow as the serpent dove forwards. There was a sickening crack as it's jaw latched onto the top of the dragon's head and ripped the wood apart.
"No!" Lucy screamed.
"Edmund!" Caspian cried out in concern.
Otto pulled himself up the stairs and began climbing the statue. As he reached to top, Edmund emerged from the ruins of the dragon's jaw and Otto reached out. They were growing closer to the rocks now and the serpent was right where they wanted it. He grasped Edmund's hand and helped pull him up over to the ladder just as the serpent lunged again. "Duck!" Otto warned and they both dropped as the razor sharp teeth buried into the wood less than a foot away from them.
"I'm still here!" Edmund shouted at the creature as they rose. He drew his sword and Otto drew his next to him. There was a flash of red and a arrow buried itself in the sea serpent's remaining eye. The thing let out a ear splitting shriek and twisted it's head. Otto dropped the sword and grabbed at the pommel of his spear, still sticking out of the thing's eye. Edmund grabbed hold and together they pulled. The blade came free with a sickening spurt of blood and green smoke.
"Brace yourselves!" Caspian's voice called out as they ship headed for the rocks. Otto gripped his spear and together, he and Edmund threw themselves from the top of the prow as the ship pinned the serpent to the rocks. The broken shards of the dragon prow cutting deep into the creature's flesh as it let out a spine chilling wail. Green smoke pouring from the wounds.
Otto and Edmund hit the hard flesh of the serpent where it was twisted around the ship and bounced off. The tow of them thudded against the deck, Edmund rolling one way and Otto another. He must of hit his head because he blacked out for a second. When he came to it was with slight fuzzy vision and a dizziness that made it hard to concentrate. Otto stumbled to his feet and looked up. The serpent had split down the middle, whole neck opening up in a gory display to reveal pink flesh and hundreds of pincer like limbs all rattling and shaking as it screeched. Otto stared at it for a second in a daze as it reared up to lunge.
"Move!" A weight hit him from the side and tackled him to the floor as the serpent dove down. Two bodies rolled and when Otto blinked again, the fuzziness fading back to grim reality, Caspain was getting off him and grabbing for a sword. He sliced one of the pincer arms off and they both watched it dissolve into green smoke. When he turned back to him, those dark eyes were full of determination. "We can beat this". Otto gripped his spear and looked up. The serpent was tearing at the sails with it's teeth.
"We have tog et it closer", Edmund voiced as he came to stand at their side.
"All hands to the main deck!" Drinian shouted.
"Ready the harpoons!" Otto commanded and he gripped his spear. He saw Edmund swing into the rigging as Caspian handed him a harpoon. He steadied it's weight against his shoulder and exchanged as breathless grin with the king next to him.
"Ready?" Caspian called as the crew assembled at their sides. Harpoons all raised. "Now!" They threw and the blades sunk into the open flesh of the serpent's neck. The beast let out a high pitched shriek. "Pull it's head closer! Heave!" They all grabbed for the ropes and pulled. The serpent struggled and Otto felt his feet sliding across the deck as it rested. He gritted his teeth and pulled harder. Above, Edmund had reached the crows nest and was standing on level with the serpent's head.
Otto could feel the rope cutting into his hands. The serpent pulled back and the rope Otto and five other crew men were holding was yanked harshly. They all gave shouts of panic as they were pulled across the deck so suddenly that let go of the rope as they lost their footing. Otto twisted and tripped over some of the debris from the mast. He felt himself fall backwards turned to see Caspian. The king still holding on to his rope and watching with sudden panic as Otto reached out to grab something to steady himself, just missing the edge of the broken railing as he plunged overboard. He hit the sea with the force of hitting glass and felt the cold water shatter around him, enveloping him and dragging him down. He barely got a chance to take a breath before the ships was out of sight and all he could see was darkness.
For a second he hung there in the cold seas, unable to see up or down. The fear of his situation had not quite hit yet and for a moment it was almost peaceful floating there. Then the need to breath gripped his chest and he kicked up, hoping that he was heading towards the surface. The water was bitterly cold and it weighted his arms and feet as he swam upwards. He could just about see light above when something huge hit the water a few feet away and the resulting wave sent him spinning through the water. It was with surprise and relief that he watched the serpent corpse sink into the depths below him, green smoke pouring from it as it dissolved.
He broke the surface with a gasp of air. As he blinked the water out of his eyes light streamed through the sky. The overhanging fog and darkness disappearing into blue sky and bright sun. With the light it felt like the ocean was warming up. The slowing grip of cold that had been tangling around him was fading as the sun glittered off the blue waves. "Narnians!" voice cried and Otto looked around. The crew were all gathering on the deck to stare as boats seemed to appear on the water. Each row boat full of people. The sacrificed people of Narnia returned as the spell was lifted.
"Otto!" Otto looked up just in time to see Caspian drop his sword and leap over the edge. He hit the water with a splash and when he resurfaced, it was with a wide blinding grin. "Otto! We did it!" He exclaimed as he threw his arms over Otto's shoulders. The weight sent them both bobbing under for a second but then they were resurfacing with laughter as Otto tangled his hands round Caspian's waist. The two of them gripping the other close as they floated.
"Are you alright?" Caspian asked as he withdrew his head from where he had buried it in the other's neck. "You are not hurt anywhere?"
"Bruised but otherwise fine", Otto grinned back. "You?"
"A few good bruises", Caspian shrugged before the grin returned. Otto couldn't help throwing himself forwards to kiss the grin off his face. The momentum sent them both back underwater again but neither cared. When they resurfaced again, it was with their foreheads pressed together and identical giddy with relieved smiles.
"We should get those people onboard", Otto muttered as he broke away to watch as Gael and her father leapt from the ship and began swimming towards the boat. Seeing the girl reunite with her mother was a heartwarming scene and he had the urge to turn back and press another lingering kiss to Caspian's lips. He didn't resist that urge and Caspian smiled into the kiss.
"I guess we should", Caspian muttered back. He turned and glanced up at the ship above them. "But Edmund seems to have it handled for a moment". Otto glanced up to see Edmund and Drinian organising the crew as the row boats grew closer. "Besides", Caspian added as Otto met his gaze. There was a smug curve to his smile and a twinkle in his eyes. "I guess we deserve a moment since we have just defeated a sea serpent after all".
"I guess we do", Otto murmured as he tightened his grip around Caspian's waist and leaned over to met the other in a kiss.
