"Bye, bye Suzie!" the Civilian waved goodbye to the little girl being picked up by her mother.
"Was that the last one, Sam?" asked the Civilian.
"Yeah, everyone has left. I'm also leaving now Teach', see you tomorrow!" said Samantha, the new kindergarten teacher, with a big smile on her face as she walked out the door and waved at the Civilian.
"Have a good night!" a fond smile protruded on the Civilian's face as he too packed his stuff, turned off the lights and locked the door to the kindergarten.
Putting on his backpack the Civilian started walking his usual route home. It was a somewhat peaceful day, save for the few screams coming from somewhere in the city. The Civilian came to think about the encounter with the Hero he had a few weeks back. Not the best encounter, but at least he got to see what kind of Hero is saving the city from harm.
Rounding a corner of a building the Civilian came to a halt. In front of him was what seemed to be the remanence of a fight between the Hero and some villains. Silently cursing the Hero in his head, he kept walking straight ahead since the walkway on his usual route was obstructed at the moment. It would probably be fixed till tomorrow, thought the Civilian. Changing routes was not something the Civilian did often, because it could cause trouble for him if he ran into some dangerous people. Then again, the city is mostly full of dangerous people with the amount of villainous attacks they have every day.
While walking past some buildings and alleyways he heard some cat noises coming from one of the alleys he passed. Turning around and walking back to the alley, he poked his head into the alley and looked around for the source of the sound. His gaze came to a stop at a white cat who was sitting on top of a trashcan stood against the wall of the building.
"Would you look at you, beautiful." whispered the Civilian as he slowly walked into the alley and up to the cat, trying not to scare it.
The cat sat still on top of the trashcan and didn't mind the Civilian walking closer to it. The cat was watching the Civilian being as careful as he could while walking towards it, tail swinging in a calm manner. As the Civilian came to a stop in front of the cat, the two stared at each other, neither making the first move. Daring to move first of the two, the Civilian stretched out his hand and held it in front of the cat. After sniffing the seemingly unharmful hand, the cat leaned into his palm started purring making the Civilian let out a small laugh as big grin took over his face.
He started petting the cat, feeling the soft fluffy fur on his hands. Letting out small praises at how kind and beautiful the cat was. While petting the cat his hands came in contact with a collar around the cat's neck.
"Oh, you aren't a stray." the Civilian sounded disappointed as he had wished he could take the cat home with him. Though seeing how well-behaved the cat was, there was no way it didn't belong to someone, thought the Civilian.
"Hey! What are you doing?!" the Civilian instantly froze and turned his head towards the opening of the alleyway.
Standing there was a tall figure, quickly coming closer and closer towards him. The Civilian looked in shock and slight fear at the person walking towards him. Removing his hands from the cat who was staring at him, he started taking fast steps backwards. Until he suddenly took a wrong step and fell backwards landing on the ground with a loud thud, his backpack not helping with cushioning his fall.
"Ow, fuck." the Civilian closed his eyes and rolled onto his side to rub at his ass, where he took most of the fall.
"Shit, are you okay?" the person rushed forward, now standing by the feet of the Civilian.
