One Month Later...
As I headed home from the shopping district, heading to a bakery nearby that I like, my headphones blocked out the sound of the people nearby. It being both midday and the weekend, the place is busy and there are so many people flowing through the area. However, as I walked through, I saw a familiar figure, and curious what she was doing, I figured I may as well head over.
I took off my headphones and said "Hey Saki, what's up?"
"Oh, hello Y/n. Haven't I told you in the past? Sometimes I go to places like this where music is constantly playing to watch people. There are lots of different people, all with different colors flowing by, and I think it's a beautiful sight." Saki said
"Oh really?" I said. I had honestly never really thought about treating the colors I see as just colors rather than the feelings they represent until I met Saki. But I have to admit it's not the worst way of looking at it, at the very least it's more appealing to look at.
"That's right, would you like to maybe join me for a bit? If you have time, that is." Saki suggested
I shrugged and said "Yeah I can give it a shot. It's not like I had anything massive planned"
Saki smiled softly, and silently I joined her in watching people. The colors of the people talking were pretty, but there were a couple occasions I had to remind myself to not look so deeply in what an individual color meant. At one point, I looked towards Saki and saw that she was smiling fondly at the crowd. Saki has mentioned in the past that the way she views this is almost like seeing their aura or something, which is way more personal than me. I mean it's somewhat similar to mine, but for me, since I'm not seeing everything I hear, there are colors I see but don't see the source of, the color bleeding into the corner of my vision. And it's exactly because of that which means there are some things that are harder for me to ignore.
"Excuse me for a sec..." I muttered as I began to walk away from Saki
I headed down the road slightly, and off at the entrance to a side alley, I found a crying child. I knew the color I saw was fear.
"A child..." Saki said, surprising me since I hadn't expected her to follow me. She looked at the boy and said "Excuse me, is something troubling you?"
I let out a small chuckle at her stiffness at the encounter as I said "I mean I think it's decently obvious what's wrong." She can be kind of soft spoken at times, and I gotta say, her being awkward because she doesn't know what to say is kind of cute.
"I know, but still..." Saki said
I crouched down and tried to give him a reassuring smile as I said "Hey, did you lose your parents?"
He nodded, crying "Uh-huh... I wanted to surprise my mom by coming out of the alley ahead of her, but I didn't see her."
"Oh yeah? Well how we help get you to some local police so that you can for sure get home. But I'll tell you what, since my friend and I here were born a bit special, we'll try and see if we can find her on the way to the police station." I said
"We will?" Saki said
I shrugged and said "I found the kid because in crowds like this the colors start to meld, but I do pick up on partially different colors that way. Still, it seems like for you, things are more precise, so maybe as we take him, I'll try to see if I can hear his mom calling out. Then if you think you can notice any particular individuals who are scared, we can ask."
"You can do that? It's like you have super powers." The kid said, seemingly excited despite the tears of fear
I give him a pat on the head and say "I don't know if it's like that, but I'll at the very least see if I can help."
I mean if she noticed her kid is missing any time recently, she'll be heading back this way and calling out for him. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up on that.
"Here, take hold of my hand so that you don't end up lost." Saki said, holding a hand out. I guess she's figured out what to do from here.
The boy took hold of Saki's hand and the three of us stepped out onto the street. As we walked him towards the station, I was trying to concentrate on picking up on the color of fear in anybody's voice, hoping it wouldn't be drowned out by everybody else.
As we nearly reached the police station, I stopped in place, and said "I think I picked up on her."
"You found my mom?" the boy asked
"Hey kid, how about you get on my back and see if you can see her?" I said before he nodded, and I helped up my back and onto my shoulders.
As I helped him up, Saki was looking around, after a minute she said "She seems kind of troubled."
"That's my mom!" The boy said as he saw the woman Saki pointed out.
We headed over, and it looked like she was about to break down in tears. She was so happy to have found her son. She was giving me and Saki a lot of thanks as the two of us awkwardly walked away, neither of us entirely knowing how to respond.
"Sorry to ruin your passtime like that." I said
Saki shook her head and said "That wasn't nearly as important as this. Still, I'm surprised you noticed him, the noise had drowned him out for the most part"
I shrugged and said "Honestly I barely heard him, but it was at least enough that I could see the color of his fear. And when I saw that, I couldn't just ignore it."
Saki smiled and said "I'm glad to hear you feel that same way."
"Hey, there's this bakery nearby. Maybe we can get something there and return to people watching." I suggested
Saki smiled and said "Of course, that sounds great."
Side by side, Saki and I headed over. I wasn't expecting to run into Saki today, but now that I'm here, I don't want us to head our separate ways already. After all, she's a pretty interesting person, and I've honestly ended up liking spending this time with her.
