CAROL-ANNE HARPER HAS ALWAYS KNOWN SHE'S DESTINED FOR GREATNESS. Coming from a family of legacy agents — and the daughter of a pair that had worked a mission with Director Fury, of all people — the young woman's path into the organisation was inevitable. It had been her dream for as long as she could remember, and she'd been training towards it for practically her entire life. In truth, it would be simply foolish for her to say that she didn't have certain advantages over other recruits. Her father had been working for S.H.I.E.L.D for nearly twenty years now, and her namesake was the woman the Avenger's Initiative had been named after.

But that's one hell of a thing to live up to - a literal superhero, and the man that had once followed her to space.

The expectations stalk her. People claim not to expect superheroics from her, or for her to know how to fly an actual alien spaceship Fitz, what the hell — but she knows they do. Of course they do. Why wouldn't they? Half the time, she expects them from herself. It's one of the reasons ( oh, who's she kidding? it's the entire reason ) that she prefers the name Anne over the name Carol, and the reason she fled as far as she could from any element of her job that would involve her piloting any kind of vehicle.

When Agent Coulson approaches her to ask - well, more command - her to join his small team of agents that will handle strange, new cases, she knows he has similar expectations. She tries to refuse, but that's kind of the thing with commands. They're not really made to be ignored, and Anne never has been one to disobey authority.

Besides, perhaps this is how she achieves the greatness. Perhaps this is how she carves her name into S.H.I.E.L.D history.

OSCAR "DOUGIE" DOUGLAS HAS ALWAYS FEARED HIS DESTINY.  He doubted it was a particularly bright one. With a past made up of more mistakes than smiles, and a encyclopaedia's worth of disasterous decisions trailing behind him, he was an idiot of mythic proportions, and it was truly a miracle he had made it this far in life without dying through his own stupidity.

An example of this can be clearly seen through his involvement with a woman named Skye. Wrong place, wrong time doesn't even begin to sum up that disaster. If Dougie had been lying spread eagle in the centre of a field wearing a full suit of armour in a lightning storm, he still would have been making smarter decisions than he was by getting himself entangled with Skye - and, in turn, S.H.I.E.L.D and its team of dysfunctional, highly intelligent and highly deadly agents that all seem to already hate his guts, despite them only having known him for a few hours.
