I felt tired, I had been working my whole life so I can make just a few cents so I don't go to sleep hungry. Working as a maid wasn't part of my plan but here I was. Scrubbing floors for the rich and being treated as dirt
"Martha!!" I sighed as my madams voice reached my ears
"Yes madam J" I said with my fakest smile going to where she was standing. She was just standing by the veranda rails watching her kids play
"My husband is bringing company, cook and leave" she said not even turning to look at me. Madam J was the meanest person I had ever came across. She had this entitlement she carries with her. I gave her a silent 'okay' then returned to where I was. I was already cooking dinner since it was a few minutes before 5. And they had their dinner earlier than most people that I had worked for. I finished washing dishes and cooking in record time. I had 35 minutes before the guests arrived so I took my things and closed the kitchen door and left without a word. That's how I worked with her.
"See you tomorrow Tom" I waved at the gatekeeper rushing to where I got my transport to go back home. It was a short distance and other maids where there waiting for transport
"Did you hear? Melisa is getting married" one lady said
"Again?" my friend Monalisa asked
"Yes, apparently it's a white man this time" she said before laughing
"Wasn't the last one white?" I asked gaining their attention
"Yes, but he wasn't white "enough" I think" Methuda said making us laugh. No it wasn't about him being white but the depth of his pockets
"It's sad really" Monalisa said as our transport back home approached us we all became silent because the driver was a gossip monger, not only that but he will share everything with the bosses as well. Alot of ladies lost their jobs because of him and his uncultured mouth
"Ladies, good evening. Did you hear?" He said with his signature smile
"Hear what?" I asked as we got in the bus and sat with Methuda on my side
"Melisa is getting married to a white man!" He said with glee evidence on his face
"That's good, she deserves it. She has been through a lot with her ex husband" Methuda said making us nodd in approval. No, we didn't care about who she married and why. We cared for our jobs so supporting her gave us bonuses and better working environment since she was the top Socialite and the other women wanted to be her friends that ass kiss her anytime of the day
"But a white man?" The driver said making me roll my eyes
"Why not? The last one was a black man and what did he do? Hurt her and divorced her" I said making the others nodd their heads too. We knew he also wanted her, rumour has it he once slept with her and she brought him a house and car in the middle class estate
"Well I thought she could, I don't know, made a better choice" he asked earning amusement from the ladies, really
"And I bet by better you mean yourself, right?" Monalisa asked making me chuckle and the other ladies to giggle. He didn't answer us and we were glad the whole issue had rested. He dropped us at our respective places. I saw the dim lit light throughout the window making me sigh. I forgot to turn off the light again? Great, just great, I walked on a fast or hurried step, my heart started beating weirdly and I didn't like it. Opening my door, I got the worst surprise ever! I had been robbed, great, just great. I walked into the room looking at what is left of my house, my stuff was just thrown all over. I felt speechless, then it clicked
"Shit!" I muttered going to my bedroom and it was trashed worse than the other room. I ran straight to my bed which had the spreadsheets untucked and some blankets were thrown on the floor and my worst nightmare was starring at me in the eye, they had torn my metress and took the money I had stuffed inside for security. I sat on the floor and took a deep breath. I felt my chest closing in on me. I hate this neighborhood, I really hate it. But unfortunately there was nothing I could do to change it. The police didn't really care at all, so reporting them would be a waste of time.
"What am I going to do?" I felt weak and tired. I took one blanket and slept on the ripped off metress . I cried for everything, not having a family, my ex husband for leaving me, the miscarriages I have had. I have had a series of bad luck in life, being 35 years old, serving those that don't even see how I was dying inside, the depression I felt daily but I kept going, not for myself but for my mother. She would turn in her grave if I commit suicide so I took it one day at a time. Eventually I fell asleep.******
I was walking on very soft grass and it was really green and lush
"Where am I?" I asked my self as I walked further into the forest. I could see the water fall from a bit far and I could hear kids giggling and laughing too. I found myself walking faster towards the water fall. The giggling and laughter didn't stop only it got louder and louder.
"You came!" A soft voice said as I stood before the waterfall and I turned to the voice and my oh my was I shocked
"Ma!" I said with new years staining my face.
"Ooh mwana wangu, don't cry. I am taking good care of my grandchildren, I'm sorry they couldn't stay long with you" she said and I kept on crying letting out the heartache and pain
"Ahhh my child, it's ok. Life is about to look up for the better" she said
"How? It's been hell and I'm tired of holding on!" I said sniffing and she smiled
"It's ok" she said hugging me and I felt this warmness and peace she came with. I looked at my kids, I couldn't see their faces but they looked really happy. They waved in my direction and I waved back
"You will be fine, trust me. You deserve it, the joy that is coming but you will also be tested. Be patient my girl" she said before kissing my forehead and I woke up*********
Woke up in the morning and I sat down thinking about the weird dream I had. It's hard looking up when things are looking down like this. I'm now broke
Great, I'm now broke and a trashed house in my disposal. Lord give me strength. At least I woke up feeling better than yesterday. And now I remember my grandfather's words about hiding money here, he would say "better hide it in your backyard where they can't find it than inside the house, darn those hooligans" now how I wish I hid it in the garden. I had no choice now than to clean this later. I took a shower and wore my work dress then rushed out locking the door, I paused walking seeing the blooming flower on the left side on the door in a flowerpot. Got it from Methuda but it died even when I watered it but now it's blooming which is weird if you asked me
"Martha hurry up, we will be left by that crazy driver" Methuda shouted from the gate making me shake my thoughts and running to her. It was just a bit after 5 am and we walked to the drop spot where we usually wait for the driver
"Friend my house was robbed yesterday" I said feeling exhausted
"Friend I'm sorry, did they take any valuables?" She said worry was evident in her voice
"All my savings friend, all of them" I sighed thinking of what to do from here now
The silence was just silent, I knew she was worried for me, I was saving for a sewing machine but it's done now. We got to the others and greeted
"Morning ladies" we both said earning smiles from the ladies
"Morning, hi" each person had their own way of greeting and I just accepted it like that.
"There was a series of break in yesterday" a girl said
"Yeah, I'm a victim of that raid" I said I had no tear to cry anymore I was done. I smiled at her with a small head shake
"Trust me, those thieves will have their day, as for now I'm just a bit sore but good" I said reassuring this people cause they were effected just as I am.
"In other news I don't want to work today. My madam makes me wash her dirty white sheet that has dried semen" the young girl said. I'm sure she is around 17 or about to turn 18
"The trick is to sock them in warm water with a bit of soda. Let the sheets sit for 15 minutes then add your detergent. You will thank me later" Methuda said dumping her shoulder.
"Don't take these things to heart. But if your master is alone at home never go to his bedroom, you will thank me later" I told her and I got alot of agreement from them
"I worked for the Kuzuva's but I have never had problems with them. Their sons are old but they don't give us trouble and my daughter is working for one of the oldest son in the city she is going to school and working at the same time" an older lady said making us aw, it's rare to find a good boss like that but that family is every workers dream. Our transport came and we sat in our sits ready to be delivered to our work places. We kept chatting, laughing in between. Others were dropped off the gates of their workers and we carried on until we get to our places.
"The torture house" I said to myself as I entered Madam J's house
