Disclaimer: I suck at writing and this is way too dramatic for a comedy anime. I might edit it later. Enjoy as much as humanly possible. (:
It was a cold night.
The wind rushed through Yor's hair as she tried to shake off her jitters. Tonight was the night. Even with all her skills and connections, she hadn't managed to track down Twilight. Her employer almost hadn't been able to believe his ears.
The thorn princess was the best of the best, so why could she not find him?
So she had instead found a close intel informant of his and given him a message, challenging him to a formal duel to the death, with benefits if he won and extreme disadvantages if he lost.
She was sure he would show up, but could she win?
Twilight, who was almost to the agreed-upon battle site, was feeling the same way. He wondered who he had made mad enough for them to send the Thorn Princess after him.
It was a miracle she hadn't found him. He was nervous but had an iron resolve. While he wasn't cowardly enough to ambush her, he had a wife and daughter waiting for him at home and he was not about to leave them alone.
Yor had just admitted she loved him, and over the few years they had been together, he had grown to love her too, which was a calculated risk. The first thing he had ever learned as a spy was to never get to attached to anyone or could lead to his downfall, and he was the best of the best, the last resort, the hail Mary when everything else has failed.
He had thought it over long and hard, but he also knew when to cut his losses and admit to himself the obvious. He was, in fact, in love with his raven-haired, mysterious, sometimes creepy, sometimes idiotic, but compassionate and headstrong goddess of a wife.
It was good he had already married her. As soon as he admitted to himself that he was in love, he found himself being irrationally overprotective, even possessive, at times. He was finding new sides to himself every day.
And with him still confused and figuring out his own feelings and mind, he wasn't confident he'd have acted professionally or even civil when it came to her if they weren't married.
He didn't want to think about what would've happened if that situation had come around.
But as it stood, he was in love, and he had contemplated it seriously, and she was in love, and he had investigated this thoroughly.
And they had a gregarious but angelic daughter, whom he loved more than anything.
However, his final but scariest conclusion was that he would do anything for either. And so he had firmly resolved to keep his family secret so that situation never came around to test that theory.
A calm, sweet voice rang out.
"Are you prepared, Twilight?"
He caught himself from his usual silent, curt nod, and replied, "No, but that will never change. Are you, Thorn Princess?"
She sounded surprised. "Really? THE Twilight is unprepared for a fight to the death? You? You have a 75% chance of winning!"
Now he was mildly surprised. "Did you calculate that yourself?"
"Of course."
"Your intel must be off because I calculated that YOU have a 75% chance of winning."
Silence.
"...Split the difference and call it 50/50?" She suggested quietly.
He almost laughed.
'Wow, being a family man really softened me up.' He thought.
"Sounds fair. I would wish you good luck because I don't wish death upon you, but I quite like being alive, so... may the most motivated win?"
"Motivated? I thought the saying was may the best win?"
"Unfortunately, I would like to win and I'm not entirely sure I'm the best. However, I have a good reason for wanting to stay alive, so there you have it."
"Fair, but I do as well. So I believe if it came to motivation, I would be victorious."
Instead of arguing, he had the strange urge to ask, "Family?"
She sat in stunned silence before asking, "How did you know?"
"I... I used to be motivated by the fact that I wanted to make this country a place where children would never have to cry, but then I met the child that strengthened that ideal. I fell in love and had a child. To leave them alone would be unthinkable. For their safety and happiness, I would like to continue living as a husband and father for as long as possible. Every day, I do my job for their safety, and my reason for coming back and doing it over and over is to see my goddess of a wife's gorgeous face in the morning and my little girl's adorable smile when I come home. I never considered my own safety during missions until I got married. Now, I have a reason to stay alive. I don't wish to kill you, but I won't stand to leave them alone. If you have a family of your own, you might understand."
"I... I do. The whole reason I became an assassin was to provide for my little brother. We were left alone so young, and I was clumsy and stupid, but I had to protect him, and keep him safe and happy. But it was all I knew growing up, so I never really thought to leave. But then, same as you, I recently fell in love and got married, adopted his daughter as my own, and for the first time, I thought about what it would be like if I had a safer job. I have almost exactly the same reason for staying alive as you do."
They stood in silence after sharing things with each other they had never shared with anyone else, not even their spouses, facing away from each other, the reason going without being said.
They both silently knew that one of them would not leave this place alive, and someone ought to know. Keeping secrets was hard and now that they were either going to die or kill the one they told, they could say things they could tell no one else. However, they were still enemies, so they decided that was the limit.
"Well, then. Good luck."
"Same to you. I will count ten paces, then we will turn and the fight will begin. No rules, except the fight is not over until one of us is dead. Agreed?"
"Agreed."
They were both ignorant of the fact as they walked, one step at a time, that when they turned, the fight would indeed begin, but it would not be with one another, it would be for one another and with almost everyone else they knew.
