"Look. Look!"
Jay slowly peels his eyes open and blinks the world into focus. Waving in front of his face is some kind of white plastic stick with black markings.
"Nya, why are you waking me up with weird magic tricks," he asks, voice groggy and gravely from a full nights sleep.
"Just look!"
It's too early for this. It's too early for silly games. Besides, since when is Nya a morning person? He is always awake before her.
"What am I looking at?"
"Just read it."
Jay gives himself a moment to fully wake up and grabs her hand to steady the object he is supposed to be focusing on.
"Two lines is positive, one line is negative," he reads aloud, "Nya what is this."
She answers him with the brightest smile he has ever seen. It takes a moment for it to finally click.
Oh.
Oh.
"Oh!" He shouts, now fully awake. "For real?"
Nya can't help but giggle.Jay pops up and grabs her in a crushing bear hug. "We are having a baby," he breathes, an array of emotions swirling in his gut.
"Mmmm," Nya agrees. She holds onto Jay as if she might fall off the edge of the bed.
He pulls back and looks down at her. "I should have known," he says.
"You should have?"
"I mean, it's obvious." He chuckles nervously.
Nya snorts, "How do you know? I didn't even know!"
Jay laughs and kisses her forehead. "You've been, how do I say this, extra angry lately."
"Yes, I've been very cranky," Nya replies dryly.
"Well, I thought that was because of all the stress. But now I see it was just hormones." He pauses. "And if it makes you feel better, I'm sure there will be plenty more crankiness to come."
Nya leans forward and kisses him gently. "Are you saying that you're okay with this?"
Jay smiles. "Of course I am. This is fantastic news, Nya! We'll need to tell your parents soon. And then we can start making plans. Oh, and maybe get a few things for the baby. A crib, stroller, clothes..."
Nya giggles. "Clothes?"
Jay grins, "Yeah, they can't live without their clothes."
"You think so? I could never imagine not needing my clothes. My shoes too. And if they don't have shoes, well, they won't make it long."
"Haha, really? You sound like a mother already."
Laughter fills the room, then slowly fades away as they share a celebratory kiss.
