Now before we continue, there is something you need to know about our children, Jessamy and Damon. Though they grew fast in my womb, they did not grow quickly outside of it. Which to this day, Lucienne can't explain. They grew just like I did. Day by day. This is an important part of our story, though you may not see it yet. But being born as children of Dreaming makes them of the dreaming. Once again...you'll see.
I rock the cradle that my children share, each of them looking angelic. I had only just gotten them down after changing and feeding them. Lucienne and I agreed that until Morpheus returned to the dreaming, I would remain with Cain and Abel. Gratefully, they were more than happy to agree. They looked at the twins as though they were remembering a time when they were that small.
Then, I shivered. It was a familiar feeling I had only felt once before. I frowned and walked over to the hand mirror set on the vanity and picked it up. "Mirror, Mirror, in my hand. Show me where this feeling lands." I whisper to it as magic flows through my palm. I took from my bracelet that held all the magic I needed to conjure. The mirror even told me where I was looking. Buffalo, New York.
There in the middle of the road...stood a man. A man who was rather lanky and slim. His hair was unkempt and he seemed to be wearing nothing more than an overcoat and some striped pajamas. The mirror followed him as he lost his slipper in the middle of the road. When he went back to retrieve it, only to be all but shoved over by a speeding taxi. As a car was about to hit him, the driver stopped and climbed out of the car.
"Are you alright?" The woman asks him, rushing to help him back to his feet. "I-I think so." He says, allowing the woman to help him to his feet. He thanks her and she apologizes. "My fault entirely." He says, waving off the woman. He was still looking around for his slipper. The spoke for a while but their voices became distorted until I couldn't hear anything. It all ended when the woman led the man to her car, and helped him into her care.
I place the mirror down before turning to look back at my twins. They were sleeping just as soundly as when I had left them. I shivered and wrapped my arms around my body. "Morpheus." I whisper, my eyes closing. When I opened them, I picked up my babies, snuggling each into the crook of my elbows. Then I put them back to bed and went outside. "Lucianne. I'm going out, can you watch them?" I ask her with a smile.
She nods and I head off. I linked my fingers with my husband's as I appeared. "I figured that you would need help." I whisper to him as I wait. Then he began leading me forward towards a bronze gong. He stops in front of the gong and I hesitate, if only for a moment. If myself and Morpheus die, there would be no one for Jessamy or Damon. So, quickly remove my bracelet. "Wherever you go, this bracelet will bring you home." I explain.
Then, I take his hand and place the charm bracelet into it. He closed his fingers around the bracelet and smiled softly at me. I took his closed fist and turned it so that I could press a soft kiss to his knuckles. "Good luck, my love." I whispered softly to him before I closed my eyes and thought of my darling twins. Magic swirled around and before I opened my eyes again I heard the familiar cooing of my babies.
"My darlings." I whisper as I lift Damon up first. I tuck him into the crook of my arm as he snuggles into me a little as his face balls up. I look up at the clock. It had been almost 2 and a half hours since they had last eaten. So, I pull down the left side of my dress and allow Damon to latch. A few minutes into feeding, Jessamy too began to get rather restless. "Hush, my love. I'll feed you in a few moments." I hum at her.
As soon as Damon finishes and I burp hum, I lay him back into the cot he shared with his sister. Then I lifted a wailing Jessamy out of the cot and let her latch onto my right breast. While I held her with my right arm, I used my left to adjust my dress so that it covered my left breast. As I fed Jessamy, Lucianne entered the room, looking shocked to see me. "I'm sorry, I couldn't stand to leave them." I admit to her as I watch Damon sleep.
Then something occurred to me. "Lucianne, can you pass me that mirror?" I request as Jessamy finishes feeding. She nodded and went over to collect it for me as I burped Jessamy and popped her into the cot with her brother. I then took the mirror as I returned to the chair I was sitting in while I was feeding the twins. It was swirling with magic and just as I was about to ask it to show me Morpheus, it began showing me something else.
"So, you live in Mayhew?" The pretty dark-skinned woman I had seen in the last vision, questioned the man she was helping. "Not anymore." The thin man admits, not quite looking at her. He didn't seem afraid, but he reminded me of some of the children I would often see with the mental defects that my father said were to be bred out. I think one of the doctors called it Autism. It was different to mental retardation.
"My, uh...things are there." He says vaguely and I watch helplessly as rain pours down the windows of the dark car. But the pretty dark-skinned woman was no the wiser about what kind of man was sitting in her back seat. Even the Rottweiler in her passenger seat seemed blissfully unaware that there was a monster sitting in the backseat of his owner's vehicle. He just sat and panted happily at the man.
The dark-skinned woman reached over and gave her Rottweiler a scratch between the ears as she continued forward, heading in the direction of Mayhew. "My mother's work forced us to move around quite a bit." He explained to the woman who hums before asking the thin man what his mother does for a living. "Actually, she passed away quite recently." He admits to the woman, making me a little curious.
And the woman, as any person would, expressed a great amount of sympathy for the man she called John. Maybe she lost someone...or maybe she was like anyone, showing sympathy as was human. "It's only just happened so I'm, I'm, I'm still a little bit..." He started stuttering and she nodded, quickly apologizing to the woman. Then John looks over at me, sitting in the seat across from, him. Staring until I pulled of out the mirror.
John knew that I knew about him. And he had a way to make me leave when he wanted.
