After searching for a good few hours on multiple browsers, Dauirmuid found nothing. Apart from a few pages describing the original werewolf origins and one telling him he might be schizophrenic or that he has lycanthropy, which is a sickness where the victim believes they can turn into a wolf, but they cannot. The tea beside him had gone cold, it was late and there was more college tomorrow. So he had no option but to return to bed and come to terms with the fact that it was just him seeing things because he was tired and stressed. He had some trouble standing to begin with, since he was wobbly from sleepiness, then he felt a third limb between his legs and looked down. He exclaimed and the tail reacted similarly, as if it had a life of its own. Then he tried to get a grip and take in what was happening. Staring in bewilderment at his new limb a few seconds, it was striped brown and amber, length was about halfway down his legs and the texture was surprisingly furry. Tails are extremely uncommon in humans, they never had hair in any records of people with the condition, and often they didn't even resemble an animal tail. His was undeniably a raccoon tail., and was rendered the opposite of "human tails". As soon as he'd finally returned to a normal pulse he began to feel as if he was choking, at first he thought he was just choking on his saliva from the panic, but the choking worsened. He began to attempt throwing up whatever was caught in his throat but it wouldn't come out willingly. Eventually, -surprisingly not wet at all but had a few stains of blood- a scroll fell out of his mouth and onto the floor. Dauirmuid clasped his hands over his mouth and let out a few final coughs, leaving a small drop of blood on his hand. The scroll looked ancient. He took it up with shaky hands and untied the yellow ribbon keeping the paper closed. Everything was written in Japanese, and Dauirmuid could only read a few small words. So he ran back to the computer with his tail between his legs, and quickly began to type into a translator. The text translated from:
この巻物を受け取った方へ、あなたがたぬきの小さな一族の領地を通過したことを残念に思います。あなたの9年間は終わったので、あなたは今その結果に直面するでしょう。あなたはもはやホモサピエンであることに発言権を持たなくなります。さようなら。
こだまの森のたぬきより。
To:
"To the person who hath received this scroll, we regret to inform you that you have tresspassed through the territory of a small Tanuki clan. You shall now face the consequences, for your nine years have conlcuded. You will no longer have a say in being a homosapien, you are now becoming something much more. Farewell.
From the tanukis of kodama forest."
He stared in fear at what the text said, a window popped up on his computer, causing the hairs on his tail to spike even more. It read: "You have searched this many times, https//coverted-web//qwer3tfhvw. You may find what you're looking for there." He stared at the link for a few seconds, considering wether he has been hacked or his computer had a virus. Eventually concluding with; what the heck? There's been too much weird shit happening today to keep track of anyways.
He clicked the link, hands still shaking. It led him to "Two million results for 'glowing black eyes and long nails.'" instead of google at the top it now read "Covert web". He scrolled down eagerly, and found a Wikipedia page for "the Tanuki, correlation between humane born shifters and ghosts, page 36." And opened the page, shaken and confused.
"The Japanese ghost legend known as the tanuki originates in.." Dauirmuid scrolled downward further, down to where it said; ".. they are known to be the symbol of luckiness and disguise.
How they correlate with shifters
It would only make sense for this mischievous species of yokai to associate themselves with shifters, as they can shape-shift into humans, statues, small creatures, and a duplicate of any object. However they choose to dissociate themselves with humans, due to how they destroyed their land to build towns. And whenever one invades their territory or offends the leader, they will give that human a nine year long chance to convince the clan of Tanuki that own the territory to forgive them, within those nine years they will have increasingly bad luck. On the first day of the ninth year, the clan that the human insulted will curse them. With eternal bad luck if they are successful, losing their riches or any fortune they may have. Cursed with deadly illnesses if they were below the age of ten, cancer, the Black Plague etc. Or if said human has none of these traits, they will become a Tanuki themselves. Starting with the unmistakable black eyes with glowing white pupils. Then leading to extra or extended limbs, the shadows under the eyes, until eventually they awake in a new body. If the individual is pregnant when they invaded the territory, the unborn child will have the same curse as the parent.
