AFTER SARAH but before Ellie, there was Harley D'Aneglo. Joel tried to leave the 15 year old behind but he just couldn't. She had made it her mission to prove to Joel she would be useful and wouldn't get in the way. After a while he agreed as long as she stopped pestering him and he told her that if he died, it was on her (something she took to heart).

ELLIE WILLIAMS was just cargo to Joel, Tess, and Harley. Someone they would never get attached to. All they had to do was drop her off for the Fireflies and they were done, or so they thought. Ellie was useful and could potentially save the entire world so, after they lost Tess, Joel and Harley let her come with them. They both grew more and more attached to the girl the longer they spent time with her.

ALL IT TOOK was a really long trip for Ellie and Harley to fall in love. They really did try to keep it from happening. Number one rule Harley gave herself for the trip? No getting attached. Getting attached meant being sad when they left or died and in this world, emotions aren't something you can risk having. They couldn't help it though. It felt destined to happen.
