"You have a text from 'Annoying D,'" Jinni says. Apparently, it's in her job description to attend dinner parties with me, whether they may be familial or business.
I chug down my eighth glass of whiskey. The alcohol burns its way down my throat and I feel my stomach close to rejecting it, but I don't care; I walk to the nearest waiter that I can find and help myself to yet another glass.
"Would you like me to read it to you?" my secretary asks hesitantly.
"Or you can shove that handheld device up my grandpa's ass!" I exclaim loudly. I don't even fucking care if someone else overhears. They can all tell my grandpa, and I wouldn't even flinch one bit.
I don't normally talk to Jinni like this. She is very efficient at her job and she's very reliable, so there is absolutely no reason to be rude to her or whatever. But I've just had enough of the bullshit about my duty to this family, and seeing her here just reminds me of it all.
"I'll take it from here, Jinni," a soft voice says in an Australian accent. "Give me the phone please."
My secretary puts my phone on Rosé's palm, then she bows to us before walking away.
"Why are you here?" I bark once I'm sure Jinni's out of earshot.
The taller woman clears her throat. Ignoring my question, she reads the text aloud, "'You keep dodging my calls. Will you not come and see me? I promise I'll prioritize you.'" She raises an eyebrow at me. "Who's 'Annoying D?'"
I finish my whiskey before I answer, "No one of importance."
"This is someone who's willing to make you a priority, darling. I think ignoring her is a grave mistake. One that you might regret in the long run." She plants a swift kiss on my cheek then hands me my phone.
I chuckle, shaking my head. "You know nothing and it shows."
She closes the gap between us and whispers seductively right to my ear, "Is that so? Well, tell me all about it tonight. Come to my house. I would love to know, Miss Kim."
Normally, I would have said yes in a heartbeat. The thing about Rosé is that it's hard to keep away from her. It's hard to say no to her.
But today isn't exactly a normal day; this day is one that I know I'd curse for the rest of my life.
"Why are you here?" I ask again.
A waiter approaches us and offers us drinks; the blondie takes a flute of champagne and I exchange my empty scotch glass for a filled one.
She takes a sip of her champagne, eyes kept straight ahead. "Perhaps you've forgotten that I am a Park. I get invited by entrepreneurs too."
"I'm certain Grandpa did not invite you," I answer, rolling my eyes in annoyance. I know I shouldn't take out my emotions on her but I can't help it; I'm just so pissed about everything that this dinner party stands for.
Instead of taking offense, she laughs; a soft child-like laugh. "You're right. I wasn't invited. I came as my father's plus one. He thinks it'll do me better if I mingle with people who are career-driven. People like himself he says."
"And do you agree?" I inquire, looking intently at the taller woman beside me.
She reaches for my free hand and puts it on her waist. "No." The word sounds like naur because of her Aussie accent. "I don't think Father understands me. I'm not like Alice, who has always wanted to be a lawyer just like our parents. I love what I do; I love modeling, I love photoshoots, I love being in the limelight. I wish he'd just stop turning me into someone I'm not."
