Harry's POV
The next thing I knew, me and Ginny were tearing through the grounds and up to the castle.
We had left all of our things from the picnic back by the tree but I still clenched the engagement ring in my fist and I could see a corner of a chocolate frog card in Ginny's. I decided to take this as a good sign.
Was I annoyed that my proposal was cut short? Who wouldn't be? But the scream that sounded, it was so shrill, so terrified. The kind of noise someone would make before they were murdered. Something was wrong.
My theory of a second fight breaking out was proved as we got closer. Bangs echoed through the once quiet air. More screams of terror were heard as we got closer.
Eventually we made it to the great wooden doors that guarded the school. We hurried threw them and into the entrance hall where we were met by a blast of freezing cold air.At first I couldn't believe what I was seeing! Great swarms of dementor's crowded the place, but the most worrying thing about this was that none of them were wearing their hood. Each dementor had unleashed it's full horror upon adults and children alike, ready to take the souls away from any one of them. Innocent or guilty, the monstrosities didn't care.
Now that their hoods were gone, you could see the full horror of what lurked beneath them. I had seen this many times but I still winced at the very sight. A dementor's only facial feature is a grotesque jaw which they clamp round the mouth of their victim before delivering them a fate worse than death. Their skin was grey and scabby, peeling off in some places to add to the horror.
The witches and wizards below the floating nightmares ran amok. The patronus charm was exceedingly difficult. Not many people, even those who had finished Hogwarts could manage one. How many souls had already been taken? I preferred not to think about it. Then I remembered the scream I heard. What if it was Hermione? Or Luna? All I could do was hope that they were both safe. I was just glad Ginny was with me at the time, God knows what I would've done if I even thought that it was her scream!
"EXPECTO PATRONUM!" I yelled.
A silver stag burst from my wand, a symbol of my dad. It galloped straight into the dementor's, forcing them to flee or evaporate into thin air. I kept my thoughts focused on Ginny, the wedding we might some day have. Maybe even children? The future I had always dreamt of. Only those thoughts helped me ignore the cold I felt, the hurt of losing so many. The one you love can often distract you from all things painful.
Soon my stag wasn't the only animal knocking down dementor's. Within seconds it was joined by a horse, a terrier, an otter and a hair. I could also see Neville from the corner of my eye, herding the terrified people into the safety of the Great Hall which seemed to be the only place without a fleet of dementor's. I breathed a sigh of relief. All my best friends were safe. And with that reliefe, I made my patronus shine brighter, completely
demolishing any dementor around it and shining above everyone else who had now a look of bravery about them rather than terror. It was actually beaming down happiness. A beacon of hope. The fighting continued for a good (or rather bad) hour. Every time one dementor left, another seemed to take it's place! However, with the help of friends, they were soon gone. I allowed the stag to shimmer and fade before turning to Ginny, a grin on my face.
"So, about that question-"
Then I was cut off, once again, by a kiss. But it was one from Ginny. There was no mistaking the spindly cold fingers that clenched my neck, the scabby grey face right I front of me. And, above all, the feeling of hope draining away from me.
Then, everything turned dark.
