"You're seriously still working?! Isn't it time to celebrate?!"
She sounded oddly chipper saying that, as if the weight of the world hadn't been put in her shoulders just a mere hours ago.
He supposed it was her way of repaying him. For being the only person to help in her darkest hour. For not leaving her behind as she was exiled because of something that was out of her control. It was kind of obvious she was looking for him.
The girl took his hand and practically dragged him around back to the village; all while talking at the top of her lungs, her arms animatedly swinging from side to side like little bunnies hopping in a snowdrift.
"Well, it wouldn't hurt to join them." he said nonchalantly. He already had gotten what he wanted at that moment anyway, so this was more of a bonus than anything.
He couldn't be more right, and yet more wrong at the same time.Everyone was happy. Chipper. Happier than they ever thought they could be— though it probably was understandable considering they prevented the world from ending. —and their spirits were soaring high into the clouds. Even he felt lighter.
And yet, he felt something was... Off. He couldn't exactly pinpoint what it was, but it definitely was gnawing at him. It wasn't the joyous atmosphere of everyone's celebration. Something else. And it was so very hard for him to describe it.
No one really noticed it though, and he was thankful that they didn't. Even if he wasn't exactly the best at lying, he had gotten good at concealing his emotions— at putting the best "customer service" sort of smile —that he could manage onto his face and pretending nothing was wrong. What could it possibly be that was bothering him though? They prevented a catastrophe. He helped his friend. They realized they were in the wrong. He managed to see a legendary historic event before his eyes. Everything had fallen into place, so why did he feel empty? Even the clans had finally gotten along-
...Oh.
...That was the problem. They finally got along and everyone was smiling... except for him. Because he knew who caused this mess in the first place. The thing that caused the animosity between the two clan's for the longest time. The animosity that had put him in such a horrible position at such a young age to begin with.
There was no acknowledgement of what they'd done, and they just got a slap in the wrist for it.As if everything that had happened to him, because of them, was no more than a footnote in history.
He continued to have a smile on his face as if nothing was wrong, but the feeling of emptiness in his chest just grew bigger. Every time he caught a glimpse of the people he considered his friends and family celebrating their victory and happiness— his own spirit deflated.
Of course this wasn't enough. Because nothing had actually changed at all. He didnt even get some sort of closure.
Well.
If he couldn't get closure here......he would have to force it into his hands.
