"Do you trust me?"

Such was a question he asked sometimes to his companions. It was lucky enough he could manage a team of 6, and people sometimes said it was because of his unyielding kindness. But he didn't really think so. He couldn't really be kind to them, and he made the mental note to stop calling his companions "companions".

"Do you trust me?"

A question that heavenly child asked whenever she was going to do something reckless. And when he said yes, she smiled like someone who had just won something.
"I trust you."
Even with her recklessness, she was efficient in gathering and doing what she needed to do. Even her own mission, given as soon as she reached this world.
It almost felt bad to lead her on this way, knowing what would happen eventually.

And then, because it seemed right when she was thrown out for something out of her control, he asked again.
"Do you trust me?"
She said nothing back, instead opting to hug him for being the only person to come to her aid. The only person to try to help her. And because of that, it sort of hurt when she learned the truth behind everything that happened so far.

"To think I trusted you." was etched onto his mind, not just being the words of that kid, but being the words of everyone else as well. A sort of karmic justice, with her deciding to get him thrown out as well.

In retaliation for breaking her trust on him, she broke the trust of everyone on him. And yet, even if he deserved it, he hated the fact that it happened. Maybe because it showed him the true colors of everyone around him.

A few years pass, and he's suddenly traveling with a different set of people entirely. But after what happened, he couldn't trust them too easily. They were perfect. Too perfect. Like a painting, or some sort of art.

The next time she came near him, their blood ran cold. She didn't expect to see him here, and he didn't expect to see her either. The intentions were clear once she started running onto them more and more frequently, and it was only a matter of time until it all came crashing down.

"They've both been leading you on."
The heavenly child had apparently collaborated with two detectives solely because they were travelling with someone they didn't know was a criminal, and she just took the opportunity to also warn them about his existence.
Warn them about him, about something that had happened a long time ago.
She was trying to break everyone's trust on him again.

And this time, it was more effective, seeing as they were still practically strangers. Those familiar cold gazes, those distant expressions, and the words coming from everyone else's mouths...

At this point, he knew he didn't really have anywhere else to run to. Or at least, so he thought, as one person walked in after that scene. A woman— the criminal —walking in as some sort of savior, giving them their last stand against them.

"Do you trust me?"
Such were her words after explaining everything. Words that he could have sworn would have been laced with poison, or worse. Instead, they were filled with the utmost care, with an underlying sincerity.
"I have to."

He wishes he hadn't.
