The crackling of the fire had been the only noise for hours now. Josh and Michael had ran out of conversation topics after the 5th day. By the 6th day they had even grown tired of complaining about the cold and the hunger and had fallen into silence. The blanket of snow over the forest had seemingly choked out all other life, anything that would be even remotely edible had withered and died long before they arrived. Their only saving grace was the wood they were surrounded with allowed them to keep the fire going, staving off the cold. He watched Micheal's eye close again, most likely another nap. They had both been taking naps more and more often, trying to save what little energy they had left. A single thought had been eating away at him for the past few days. They were surrounded by miles of forest and snow. Nobody was coming for them, at least not any time soon and if either of them was going to make it, they would have to eat soon. He didn't want to entertain the thought but it was becoming increasingly prominent. The only food for miles was Micheal. He shouldn't. He wouldn't. But what other options were there. He was asleep, he could kill him with a large rock, he wouldn't even notice, a painless death. He'd eat him and one of them would live. He bet he'd taste amazing and he hadn't eaten in so long. He realised suddenly that he was now standing over him, holding a large boulder in both hands. He was almost there, he just needed to swing it, swing it and he could live, swing it and he could eat.
Crunch. Micheal yelped as the boulder crunched the back of his skull, dropping to the floor. He made pained noises as he laid there, still alive. Josh didn't care, he was down and wasn't getting up. Without a second thought he reached down and rolled Micheal over, his blood staining the snow under him. Josh tore his shirt open and took a bite out of his stomach. He tasted meat for the first time in a week and he needed more. He started eating faster, ripping and tearing with his teeth and fingers as Micheal screamed in pain. Josh didn't stop, he found food, so much food. He earned this kill, he was going to enjoy it. Soon Micheal's screaming had stopped and he sat next to his lifeless body, his chest open and guts laying out. He was full for the first time in what had felt like an eternity. He smiled, laying by the fire and closing his eyes. Letting himself fall asleep after his long awaited feast.
