Chapter 9: The Answer

Note: I would like to mention that the baby bump doesn't start showing till about 16-20 weeks. (Which would be about 4 months.) So, she doesn't have a baby bump yet! (And, around 3 months in is a good time to check your babies gender, in case you wanted to ask why I chose such a specific time. Also, they don't have ultrasound in this time, so pregnant woman just took a blood test to check gender.)

Sanemi POV:
Kanae is about 14 weeks (3 months) pregnant. She has officially retired from slaying so, me and the other Hashira are planning her a surprise party and gifts. Mitsuri and Hayami-Chan (who just got released from the butterfly mansion) are in charge, obviously.

"Onii-Chan, which fabric do you think would look better on a dress?"

Hayami-Chan shows me two fabric patterns, that she plans to make into a dress for Kanae. One is a baby pink with green butterflies all over it. Other is a sky blue color with pink flowers and green vines.

"I don't know, ask Mitsuri."

"I tried and she couldn't decide. Besides, you know Kanae-San better than any of us."

"Fine, the pink one looks better."

"Thanks, Onii-Chan!"

She smiles and walks away. I look back at Iguro who's helping Mitsuri decorate Hayami-Chan's estate for the party. You can tell how much of a simp he is just by looki-

"Shinazugawa-Sama!"

I snap out of my thought process and look up at whoever called me.

"Aoi-Chan? What are you doing here?"

"I came to get you. You're supposed to be distracting Kanae-Sama!"

"Oh, right. Where is she?"

"She's in her room, reading something she found on her book shelf."

That seems pretty typical of her.

"Alright, I'll head over there."

Aoi-Chan walks away. She acts so sassy yet she's only 11. (In this timeline)

——————— Time Skip

I finally reached Kanae's estate. I head to her room, and the door's open by just a sliver. I put my hand up to knock but then hear her singing.

"Hushabye... Baby bunny on a hill... Tell me why your eyes are so very red... Because when my mother was expecting me, she dined on red berries from a tree... And that is why my eyes are so very red... "

(IM SO SORRY 😭😭)

She sings so beautifully... I smile and knock on the door.

"Come in!"

"Konichiwa, Kochou."

"Ara Ara~ Konichiwa, Shinazugawa-Kun. How are you?"

"I'm fine, and you?"

"I'm great! I'm getting a blood test tomorrow to find out how many kids I'm having, and their genders! I've been so excited!"

She was brushing her hair and there was a book left out on her bed.

"That's great, I'm happy for you."

"Oh, right, I forgot. Have you eaten yet?"

"No, I haven't eaten yet."

"Aoi-Chan made some food before you left."

She gets up and sets her hairbrush aside.

"Come, let's go eat. I haven't eaten either."

I just smile at her and follow behind. When we reach the kitchen, food is laid out on the counter.

We both sit down.

"itadakimasu" (Thank you for this meal / I receive this meal.)

We pick up our chopsticks and begin eating.

—————— Time Skip

"Thank you for the meal, Kochou, but I should get going in a bit. It's getting late."

"Ah, of course. I'll see you around, then!"

"Matane, Kochou."

"Matane, Shinazugawa-Kun"

I begin walking away and suddenly, she grabs onto my haori. I turn back and she seems a little nervous.

"Shinazugawa-Kun. We seem to be close enough to be considered friends, so I was thinking we should call each other by our first names."

I think for a moment, looking down. When I look back up, Kocho is looking at the ground. You can tell she's blushing.

"I'm glad you asked, Kanae."

She looks up, shocked, struggling to find words. Instead of responding, she simply smiles. I smile back at her and walk away. I get back to my estate and immediately jump on my bed, smiling like an idiot. I chuckle.

"𝒦𝒶𝓃𝒶ℯ." (Kanae)

Author-Chan: Hello! I would like to clarify one thing here, that a lot of you might be worried about- Hayami and Kiyomi (my oc and her twin) see Sanemi as their older brother. Which is why they call him Onii-Chan. If you refer back to their backstory Sanemi saved them from the streets, welcomed them to his estate, and trained them. They also see Genya somewhat like their younger brother. (They are both 19 in the canon time line and 15 in this story. Genya is 16 in the canon timeline and 12 in this time line. So, that makes them 3 years older than him.)
