Next Day

"Karen! Karen!" He shouted.

I heard my father yells echo throughout the house. I looked up at my clock, in bold it said, 6:45am. Thank God there was no rehearsals early this morning. I don't know how I would of made it. It was a later night than usual and I needed all the sleep I could get.

Slowly, I gathered myself anticipating my father barging in the room.

"3..2...1" I counted to myself.

"Good morning babygirl." He cooed. "It's time to get ready for school. We're leaving in 30 minutes."

"Okay" I said swiftly. I waited for my father to exit the room and I quickly got up and prepared myself for school.

I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth first. Then, I turned on the water for my shower. As I waited for the water to heat up, I grabbed my phone and connected it to my speaker and played Aretha in the background. I got in the shower and my body relaxed under the hot water.

I was getting lost in the music and the feeling of the water. I could stay in there forever if I could. But I quickly realized time was getting ahead of me. Out the shower I went and back to my room to dry off. I threw on my clothes rather quickly, glanced at myself in the mirror one final time and headed downstairs.

"Dad! Dad!" I yelled out.

"I'm ready to go."

"Sorry, duties called, but let's go." He said.

The drive to school was relatively short and quiet. That was just us. I enjoy the moments of silence. I gave my father a kiss and said, "Have a good day dad, love you and I'll see you later tonight?"

"Alright babygirl, I love you too. Don't forget keep God first and stay out of trouble! I'll see you tonight." he rang.

And with that, he pulled off and I walked inside Mumford High School. It was a typical, normal day as a sophomore. I walked in the hallways to my locker and tuned out the noise and echoes.

"Oh Karen.. Karen.." a soft voice echoed.

I was suddenly met with hands covering my face as the voice echoed my name some more. "Guess who?" the voice asked. I stood stunned and confused and waited for the voice to reveal themselves.

"Okay fine, it's Dorinda." she chuckled.

As soon as I heard the familiar name, I smiled brightly and faced her.

"Hey Doe!" I said with excitement and I hugged her tightly.

"How are you?"I asked.

"I'm great, just heading to study hall." she responded.

"Well, I'm heading to English. Do you want to walk me there?" I asked.

"Sure, no problem." the response fell quickly from her lips.

We walked down the hall in silence until Dorinda asked a question.

"So what are you doing tonight? Are you busy, do you think your dad would mind me coming over or you come over to my place? We can study and listen to some more music." She smiled.

"My dad is going to be coming home late tonight, but I can certainly ask him. I don't think he'll have a problem with it. Matter a fact, let me ask him right now."

"Wait, put your number in my phone so I can text you with his answer." Dorinda smiled and nodded and insert her number into my phone and saved it.

"Done! Looks like you've reached your stop as well." Looking up, I see we've reached my English class. I turned to Dorinda and gave her a hug and said, "Thank you once again. I'll text you. Have a great day!" She responded with, "You too Karen" and walked away.
