NO POV

Dorinda and Karen quietly went to the bedroom door and listened to the argument take place downstairs with their parents.

Meanwhile downstairs Mattie and Drew are in a heated discussion..

"Drew, I'm not having this discussion right now with you. Enough is enough. I don't need it right now!" Mattie yelled.

"Mattie, we are if we plan on joining families one day. We need to be on the same page and how you're raising your daughter isn't the way!" Drew shouted back.

"How I'm raising my daughter isn't your concern or business! I've been doing just fine, MAN OF GOD. Another thing, who the hell are you to judge me? You don't have to worry about a family or joining forces in any way. You don't have to worry about dealing with me no more. After this weekend, MY DAUGHTER AND I will be leaving the damn church. Go to hell!" Mattie spat out in anger.

Karen and Dorinda looked at each other in disbelief. They couldn't believe what they heard from both of their parents.

At this point, Dorinda and Karen moved for the door and sulked in sadness. They sat on the bed quietly until Karen spoke.

"I don't want you to leave the church. You, we— we were just starting to become close, great friends." Karen said with her head low.

"I don't want to leave either but, my mother, once it's said, it's a done deal. But, we'll still see each and hang out during school, right? Dorinda questioned.

"Yeah, of course.. sure.." Karen said above a whisper.

"Dorinda! Dorinda!" Mattie shouted heading towards her room. "It's time to say goodbye to Karen and her father. You won't be seeing much of them anymore." She said in a low tone.

"Karen, say your goodbyes, and you won't be hanging out with her anymore either. I can't control what happens at school, but, no more hanging out outside of school." Drew spoke in a monotone.

"Oh, there's something we can agree on, Dorinda, you won't be hanging out with Karen anymore. School is a different story, you may cross paths, so that's inevitable." Mattie said agreeing.

"Enough Mattie." Drew threw back. I'll be waiting in the car. I'll let you say your goodbyes. It was a pleasure getting to know you Dorinda." Drew kissed Karen on her forehead and walked out the room and out the house.

"Don't take too long Doe. You both have school in the morning." Mattie said while exiting the room.

Karen and Dorinda gave each other one last look before embracing in a hug, which seemed like forever.

I'll see you around. Don't forget about me." Karen whispered in Dorinda's ear.

"Never, you're hard to forget." Dorinda responded. Dorinda gave a small smile and watched Karen leave her room quietly. Eventually she heard the front door close.

Words couldn't expressed what Dorinda was feeling. She found herself getting ready for bed and not saying another word. It was silent, a deadly silence. Before she knew it she had cried her sleep asleep.

Dorinda POV

It's been weeks since I've last seen Karen. Occasionally I would see her at school. The most interaction we had was a quick smile and wave, that's was all. That was its come to.

I was sitting at lunch, getting lost in my train of thoughts until familiar voices snapped me back into reality.

"Doe! Yo!" I heard J. Drew and Greg screamed across the cafeteria.

"Hey guys, what's going on? What did y'all bring me for lunch?" I said chuckling.

"Close your eyes.. not a damn thing!" Greg shouted. I'll remember that when y'all are left to starved, I snapped back quickly.

I noticed J wasn't interacting with us much per usual. He seemed spaced out. He was deep in thought about something. I was determined to find out what it was.

"Drew, what's on your mind? You aren't here with us." I asked with concern in my voice. "What is it? Failing? Stuff at home?" I questioned.

Greg and I patiently waited for an answer from him.

"Oh, I'm alright in those areas, he chuckled. I'm thinking about something else. I'm wondering if I should give this girl a chance."

"Shut up, you're lying! Say word!" Greg whispered yelled. "Someone finally got your attention?" Greg questioned.

"I overheard a conversation today during class. I heard a group of people talking about a girl having a crush on me. But it's the girl I'm concerned about." Drew answered honestly.

"Wait, why are you concerned about the girl?" I said.

"Yeah, what's the issue bro?" Greg chimed in.

"The issue is, it's Karen. Your Karen, Doe." Drew said looking into my eyes.

All I could do was stare into space. A million of thoughts ran through my mind. I didn't know where to place them, how to feel.

"I think you should go for it. Give it a shot Drew! She's really a sweetheart!" I said looking back at Drew.

"Are you sure Doe?" Drew questioned me.

"I'm positive, go for it." I cheered him on.

Drew smiled quietly and the rest of the period was silent. I was silent. I still couldn't believe the conversation. I mean, she's just a friend. Well we're barely that anymore. Plus, Drew has been a great friend to me, more like a brother. He deserves to be happy. Who am I to get in the way of that?

Drew POV

I'm glad I was able to talk to Doe and Greg about the Karen situation. I'm just worried about Doe, she seemed happy, but I know her, something is off. Maybe I'll talk to her another time.

So the plan is to reach out to Karen and get to know her and take things slow. I'm in no hurry. Hopefully I see her sometime after school today.

Hours later had passed and we finally reached the end of our school day. Time seem to pass by slower than usual today.

I headed towards the doors to exit out the school into the parking lot. In the midst of walking to my car, I see Karen walking towards her. I unlocked my doors and dropped off my items. "Alright here goes nothing, keep calm.." I spoke silently to myself as I approached Karen's car.

Karen POV

There was nothing special with school today. It the same old routine. Honestly I can't wait to get back home. I need to decompress.

As I'm walking to my car, I noticed someone walking towards me. Instantly, I became tensed with nerves. Quickly I tried to speed up the process of entering my car and drive off. Time just wasn't on my side, I didn't move fast enough.

"Hey Karen! Wait a minute!" I heard. I took a deep breath before responding to the voice appearing close in distance.

"Hey." I responded shyly.

"I'm J. Drew, everyone calls me Drew." He smiled. "Look I'm not going to keep you long, but I overheard people talking today. I heard that you had a crush on me?"  He continued in a questionable manner.

Nerves. I've never been in this situation. I don't know how to answer him. Here I am looking and listening to him and I'm battling with what to do in my head. Finally I just blurted out, "Um, YES Sorry.." I looked down. I inhaled, and looked up at him and said, "Yes, I have a crush on you."

Drew looks back with a grin and said, "Okay, good to know. I don't listen to gossip. I'm more of a direct person. So I came to source myself." He chuckled.

"Karen, can I have your number?" He asked. "Uh, yeah sure, absolutely. Put your number in my phone." I gave Drew my phone and waited as he enter his number.

"There you go, text me. Thanks for talking with me. I'll catch up with you later at school?" Drew petitioned. "Sure, I'll text you and see you around Drew." I replied.

Drew gave me a small smiled and walked off to his car. I finally let go of the breath I was holding and go into my car.

"Whew, what a day. Its time to process. I can't believe that just happened." I whispered to myself and drove off.
