(AK'S POV)
Today is another day of people coming in and adopting kids. I'll be very happy for my friends! But I'll miss them if they get adopted, I don't have a phone yet so I don't have a way to stay in contact with them. I have a tablet given to me by the caregivers here but I can't really contact people with it, I don't have social media except for YouTube. Unfortunately I usually don't get adopted.
I sat on my bed in a shared room with some other kids, we would be called down when the adopters arrive here soon. I'm always very nervous but I'm never gonna give up. I talked to some kids while waiting. They also seemed nervous, I think everyone gets nervous when it's a day that people are coming to adopt. Yeah… I'm mostly worried about someone coming off as caring but then being really bad once I'm in their custody. Well, let's just hope for the best!
Eventually I heard one of the workers call us down, I put my stuff down and quickly made my way downstairs alongside the other kids. There were quite a few people today, there were two couples together and two people on their own. They looked around and talked with kids and workers, some left with paperwork while others left with nothing. None of them stopped to speak with me except for one man, the last person there.
I was sitting by myself at a table thinking everyone had left when suddenly he approached me and sat down in front of me. He startled me and I looked up at him, he had sweet light-blue eyes and a friendly smile on his face that made me smile when looking at it. This man looked very familiar, I can't remember where I've seen him though.
"Hi, I'm Lewis!" He said, stretching out a hand.
"Oh, hi! AK, I'm AK." I said, shaking his hand.
"AK? Just the letters A and K?"
"Yeah."
"Huh, interesting name. Hey uh sorry if this is an odd question but are you a boy or a girl? Didn't really get an answer from the workers here, haha." Lewis laughed.
"I am what I am." I stated.
"Oh, that's fair. What do you prefer to be called? He? She? They? Something other than that?"
"I prefer they but if that's confusing then he or she works!"
Lewis shook his head. "No no, it's not confusing. Whatever you're comfortable with, mate."
I was so happy to hear that. I've never been told that by people outside of the workers at this place. I thought I would never come across someone that was completely accepting of me! But… does he want to adopt me? He's just getting to know me so far, he could change his mind…
No, don't think like that!
"How old are you?" He asked.
"I am 11."
"Cool, I'm 23."
"Aren't you a bit young to take care of kids?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Ay? Nah, and besides I'm looking for older kids like you anyway. They'd be easier to take care of… I don't think I'd ever be ready to take care of like, a newborn baby."
"Oh!"
"What are your hobbies and stuff? I like playing video games, I love this one franchise called Five Nights at Freddy's…"
"I know those games! Uh, my hobbies… I don't do much honestly. I like watching YouTube and I sometimes like drawing. And reading."
"Drawing is cool. Any YouTube channels you like to watch?"
"I like this one guy called 8-BitRyan."
For some reason when I said that he giggled, smiling slightly wider as his eyes lit up.
"That's cool!"
We talked for a little more, there was something so familiar about this man but I couldn't pinpoint why I recognized him…
Our conversation was cut off by a worker coming up to us, well, more like going toward Lewis, telling him that it was almost closing time. He nodded and stood up from his seat.
"It was nice talking to you, AK. Unfortunately I have to go now." He said, giving me a pat on the head.
"It was great talking to you, goodbye!"
He gave me one last smile before he walked away with the worker but he didn't exactly leave the building. He was speaking to them but I couldn't hear the two talking but then the worker brought him into a room. A room that is known as…
The paperwork room…?
Wait. No way! Could this actually be happening? Am I finally being adopted!?
