I was woken up by the sound of an obnoxious frog croak and earsplitting bird chirps. I slowly opened my eyes, to quickly slam them back shut as soon as the sun's beams hit my sensitive eyes. I groaned out of pain and annoyance. I got up with my eyes still shut and accidentally tripped. I opened my eyes to observe what I had clumsily fallen over."What the..." I sighed before picking up the old wooden toy and stacking it away in my closet. I rubbed my eyes gently, they hurt enough already. I let out a yawn before stretching my back and arms, hearing a couple satisfying cracks. I opened my eyes again before navigating my way to my bathroom.
Once I was in my bathroom, I stared at my extremely messy hair.
"Ew. I can taste my breath." I said before drenching my toothbrush in water and applying toothpaste to it. I scrubbed my teeth before brushing my hair and putting on a necklace my 'father' supposedly gave me before he left permanently. I stared into my eyes in the mirror, the same pair of eyes stared back. I sighed again before finally deciding to get ready in an outfit I had. I hated how formal they were compared to the regular peoples clothes. I finally finished getting dressed and headed out of my bathroom and down the halls, stopping at the dining hall."Ah, y/n sweetie. Just in time for breakfast. It's French toast with eggs and waffles." Your mother said cheerily. She's a bit too happy for a person who is so...Sick? What she has isn't contagious, but it's definitely killing her. She's expected to die in two weeks. I guess she's just trying to lighten the mood a bit? No matter what, she's dying. I don't like that.
I finally took a seat and said thank you to the people who'd made it, and ate despite not wanting to. It's difficult to have an appetite when your mother is sick and basically dying right in front of you.
"So, y/n." My mom started.
"Yeah, mom?" I asked.
"As you know, I'm probably going to...Pass, soon. And you still need to find someone to marry, so I have plans set up for you to meet three royals from three different kingdoms this noon." Mom said.
"Alright...But can we not talk about you being on the brink of death, please?" I asked. She chuckled before nodding and continuing to eat.It was now eleven a.m. and I was getting ready to meet a few other royals. I only know one of the people I'll be meeting. Her name is princess Donna. She has a really nice name, if I'm being honest.
"Heir Y/n, the guests have arrived." A butler told me.
"Okay, thanks for telling me. I'll be down shortly." I said before dusting myself off once more and looking in my full-body length mirror. I sighed before making my way to the entrance outside, where three royals stood before me. Prince Vance of Black Valley, Princess Donna of Baséllia, and Prince Bruce of Dentor. They all bowed, and you bowed back. You could just feel Prince Vance's snarl, Princess Donna's calm expression, and Prince Bruce's smile. You were always good at reading rooms and stuff similarly to that."Hello, as you probably know, I'm Y/n. No need to be so formal with me." I said fairly plainly.
"Sup'. Name's Vance." Pr- well, Vance introduced.
"Hello! Pleasure to meet you. My name is Princess Donna of Baséllia! I can't wait to learn more about you." Princess Donna said.
"Hey there! I'm Prince Bruce of Dentor. I'm excited to hang out with you." Prince Bruce said.
"Pleasure to meet you all, too. Shall we make our way to the garden?" I asked, trying to sound just a bit more happy.I started walking to the garden, the other three following from behind. We made it to the glass doors and I opened them, admiring all of the purple, blue, and violet flowers that were scattered across the garden attached to the palace. I walked in to the ring where there was a fancy gazebo and some white swinging benches. I took a seat and the others did, too.
"So, any questions about anything?" I asked. I took note of Prince Bruce and Prince Vance trying their best to completely ignore each other.
"I have a question." Prince Bruce said. "How come the main colors of this palace is blue, purple, and violet?" He continued. I sat there, pretending to think, when really I knew exactly why.
"I'm not quite sure. It's probably because they're my mother's favorite colors." I replied. Lie.
"Well, I think they're very pretty." Princess Donna complimented.
"I think it could use more red and orange." Vance complained. I simply looked away from him and his obnoxious red cape he had on. It got really awkward and I thought, 'Maybe we should've done this individually...'We all sat in a comfortable silence for a while before I lifted my finger up, A purple butterfly landing on it.
"How'd you do that? Thats so cool!" Princess Donna said.
"I don't know, sometimes I get lucky and it happens." I replied. After a while, Prince Bruce asked to speak with me privately.
"So, I was wondering if maybe we could each hang out with you separately? I just feel like it'd be easier and less awkward. This is your time though, so you don't need to." He said.
"Thats actually a pretty good idea. Lets do it." I said before walking back to the garden.
"Hey, Vance and Princess Donna. I think you two should stay here while me and Prince Bruce go out a roam for a while. Bruce was thinking we should each spend individual time with each other." I said.
"Anything to get a break from you." Vance muttered. I took Bruce and walked out back to the halls."How has life been?" Prince Bruce asked.
"...My mother is kinda dying, but other than that I'm...Okay I guess." I replied.
"Oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't notice." He sympathized.
"Its alright. Anyways, how've you been?" I asked.
"I've actually been quite nice. However, the black smith in my kingdom currently has an issue, so my army can't get weapons as quickly as we need them." He explained.
"Oh, why do you guys need more? I'd be happy to lend some weapons to you guys through trade." I said.
"We need more because during our last battle with Black Valley, we lost a lot of weapons and soldiers." He said.
"Wait, isn't that Vance's kingdom?" I asked.
"Yes, his father and mine...They don't get along as well as they used to. It's confusing because they both used to be childhood best friends, but now they're enemies. I have no idea why, my father keeps avoiding my questions." He explained further.
"Ah, that explains why you two were avoiding each other. What did Black Valley take from you guys because of their victory?" I asked.
"Well, they destroyed our black smith, and took some fortune. Luckily, they didn't have access to all of it." He said.
"Well, Dentor is the wealthiest kingdom, isn't it? And isn't Black Valley is one of the strongest?" I asked.
"Yeah, I think thats right." Bruce said before sighing. We both continued our stroll before returning to the Garden."Um, y/n? May I go on a stroll with you?" Princess Donna asked.
"Yes, of course. Vance, me and you next, hm?" I hummed before stepping out into the hallway with Princess Donna. We both talked about fairly useless stuff, cracking a few jokes. I must admit, Princess Donna is quite pretty. Well, Baséllia is home to the most beautiful people in the region.
"So, Prince Bruce didn't say anything about the past between Baséllia and Dentor, right?" She asked worriedly.
"No? Is something wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing...Its just...Dentor and Baséllia don't have the best past together. Out of the five kingdoms in the region, I think these two have the most blood on their flags." She whispered the last part. I was quite shocked. "The past is from when my great-grandparents ruled over Baséllia. Due to both kingdoms being so close together, they argued over the riches. I guess you can tell which kingdom won that." Donna chuckled. I smiled, knowing that I'd want to dive deeper into this history in the palace's library.
"Hey, did you know the library here in the palace has books that are over one hundred years old?" I stated.
"Oh, wow! Thats so cool. The oldest book in our library is only seventy-five years old." She said. We rounded the corner and saw Vance standing outside the Garden, pinning Bruce to the wall in an aggressive manner.
