Emily

*February 27th, 2022*

Emily sat there at home, slicing into the new letter from Peyton that she wished had arrived much sooner. Sipping on her wine.

"Dear, Emily.

I know it's been a while, I've been thinking of what all to put on a letter to you. I'm thankful for your last letter. And if it's not too creepy, I think your perfume smells pretty, it's not weird at all. Which is why I've sprayed my letter too, with the cologne I wear daily."

At that she took a whiff of the letter, relaxing into the very nice scent. They smelt amazing, she could imagine settling into their arms, smelling the sent as they hugged her.

"I played my first real show the other day, played one of my singles I've worked really hard on. We're not recorded or anything but maybe you could plan a trip to come see me sometime. I could even plan a trip out to California. Speaking of planning trips, I know this is against the rules of the program. But I am only getting busier and would like to keep talking to you. It sucks we can only talk every so often on paper, I'd love it if you'd text me. My number is 212-456-7890 and I hope you will break the rules with me to talk more."

Emily thought it funny that they both had similar ideas. She really hated only talking to them every so often. She grabbed her phone and her wine glass and sipped away as she punched the number into her text message.

"Hey you 😊" she texted. The blue message marked as delivered and then read. Then the bubble popped up, they were typing back.

"Area code 415- I'm only assuming this is Emily?" They texted back.

Emily smiled and placed the letter down on the table. She grabbed her phone and wine glass and covered herself with a soft blanket on the couch.

"This is she. How are you?" She texted back.

"I'm awesome. Like my letter said, our little band is blowing up a bit out here." Peyton texted back.

Emily smiled, happy for them, "that's awesome to hear. When are you playing a big show next? Maybe I can make it out there? Stay with you?"

Peyton was typing for a long time, making Emily second guess. When the long message did rise up, it said, "you would really come all this way to watch me play? That's so cool of you. I play next weekend if you're down to come then? Of course you can stay here, I have a comfy bed I'd set you up in. What are you up to now?"

Emily looked at her wine glass and smiled, shaking her head, "getting wine drunk in the afternoon." She texted, sending a picture of her with her wine glass.

"Naughty girl. Before 5 o'clock? Wow you are beautiful." Peyton texted back.

Emily blushed and smiled at the message. "It's actually earlier that over there. It's 1:30 here." She laughed to herself, "send a pic?"

Once Peyton did send a picture, her heart stopped. Peyton was a woman, she was not at all expecting that outcome. With the talk about girlfriends and the handsome smelling cologne, she imagined Peyton as a grown man instead of the young woman. She knew she had never truly asked her what their gender was because it didn't really even matter. She surely wasn't into women in that way, but Peyton was gorgeous. It was a picture of her with her guitar on stage, she wondered who took the picture, who she was smiling at?

"This is my yin and Yang guitar, that's what I call her at least. This is an older pic, my hair is short now." She sent with the picture.

"Wow. So are you." Emily texted, she wasn't sure why she assumed Peyton was a man, but she was very much a gay woman from the picture she could see. A cute one at that.
