future you?..
song: haunt me - surf curse, mistakes like this - prelow•••
The medical dynasty your family and ancestors laid out for you never seemed appealing to you. as an only child, no one was there to take over this twisted standards your parents set for you. the stakes were high. your mother's constant nagging and her exasperating need to push you over the edge to always beat your cousin, malcolm. you thought she will finally be pleased when you got into a better university than him, but not even close.
if you were honest, you thought that the money and respect you will gain from going into med school were going to be enough; but med school was slowly killing you. it was also a nice thing to play along with during family dinners.
the studying until your eyelids were begging you to close them was surprisingly tolerable. you barely slept, the bags under your eyes were manageable during your grad school days. you succeeded in residency, the world was yours waiting for you to take it, but then you had to graduate.
luckily for you, your parents took care of tuition while you were a stuck up to your professors. a few practices with your parents made you get into your new life. you liked the thrill, and the adrenaline but couldn't handle the smell. it was a hard sting that went up your nostrils and stayed with you almost every day.
but like any other human, you burnt out.
you were an overachiever, beating everyone else that got in your way. but you were simply tired. you weren't happy, nothing made you happy anymore.
you loved medicine, you were forced to but you ended up loving it. it was the only thing that kept you from dropping everything, and picking something to focus your life in. that's why you worked every day to get your license as a surgeon even though, you were unhappy at least everything in your life just made sense, right?
Everyone around was satisfied by you now. Everyone but you.
At the peak of your nightly midlife crisis a presence interrupted it. "Hey" you heard the voice of one of the stubborn interns you knew very well so far. although you were one of them once, you never thought of yourself so self centered. well, times change.
"Hello, Sapnap" You looked up to the man greeting you, but then back at the empty parking lot. Usually your breaks on night shifts this side of the clinic with the big parking lot was your spot to sit on a sidewalk. Sapnap wasn't going to drag you away from that so you barely acknowledge him.
You already gave him enough of your attention for guiding him and the other interns which happened to be some of his best friends. This was your time alone, away from stress of your regular day and he was getting in the middle of it.
a fresh breeze pushed against you, sneaking in your body making you shiver. the long sleeve shirt underneath your uniform wasn't enough to keep you warm anymore.
Sapnap looked down at you, a growing interesting picking up on him. "so this where you hide during your breaks" sapnap asked taking a seat next to you on the sidewalk with no hesitation. if there was something you hated finding attractive or him was his confidence. just sometimes when it centered at you.
but otherwise he is determined to annoy the complete fuck out of you anytime you try to get away from him. also when he seems to act like a smart ass with patients.
"the bar was closed" you answered resting your arm on your knees still focused on the amount of cars parked. you take one long drag, then look over at sapnap who was already staring at you with those passionate eyes. "you want?" you extend your arm towards him, while the smoke blew out of your mouth while you spoke.
