Spiraltail, Whitestripe and Ashpelt had kept guard all night, and now they were tired and cold.
Ashpelt flopped onto one of the nests on the far right side of the den, while Spiraltail and Whitestripe lay on the two nests on the left.
The only other warriors in the den were Windcaller, sitting in his usual spot in the middle of the den, Redpelt, sleeping on a nest not far from Windcaller, Willowleaf, whose belly looked quite swollen, Iris-Eye, Reedtail, Creamfur and Swiftflight, closer to the edges of the den.
"Where are Voleroach and Mossgaze?" Ashpelt asked Iris-Eye drowsily. Iris-Eye had been cleaning her paw.
"They're with Whiteshine and Tigerfur on a patrol," the brown warrior explained.
"Spidertail is helping Fernfeather with Fuzzyear," Willowleaf said from her nest.
"What's wrong with Fuzzyear?" asked Spiraltail, sitting up.
"She's kitting, at last!" Windcaller yelled happily.
"Wow, congratulations, Windcaller!" exclaimed Whitestripe.
"If she's kitting, shouldn't Crookedfire be in there as well?" Ashpelt inquired.
"He had an errand to run, he said," Willowleaf said, rolling her eyes. "He left Russetpaw alone in the Medicine Den to sleep while he searched for any living herbs."
"Or so he says," Iris-Eye grumbled.
"Be quiet," moaned a tired Redpelt from behind Windcaller. "Some of us didn't get a lot of sleep last night."
"He's just angry because of his son," Windcaller explained. "Fair, though. I hope my kits stay safe."
Redpelt shot him a scornful look, and Windcaller sat up.
"I didn't mean it like that!" Windcaller apologised. "I just meant, when Fuzzyear has our kits, maybe you can train one of them as an apprentice instead of having to worry about your lost son."
"That doesn't really sound any better," Reedtail added from the back of the den.
Swiftflight merely chuckled, sitting on her nest next to Creamfur, who observed with mischievous eyes.
"Don't get your tails in a twist, you two," Willowleaf snapped. She flinched slightly, then shook her head. Will Willowleaf have kits of her own? Spiraltail wondered absently. It wouldn't surprise her. Spidertail and Willowleaf were mates, everyone knew that.
And she was also suspicious of her bulging belly.
"You three should rest while you can," Windcaller said, turning away from Redpelt and looking at the three siblings instead.
"Yes, Tigerfur said he wanted you for something, Spiraltail," said Redpelt grumpily, flopping back down on his nest.
"Can't we see Fuzzyear's kits?" asked Whitestripe sadly, yawning unknowingly.
"Once you've rested, I will ask her," Willowleaf promised.
Spiraltail, no longer paying attention, rolled on to her nest, wishing nothing more than to sleep in the warmth of the den.
Spiraltail dozed until, finally, the sleep overtook her, engulfing her in darkness.
